Becoming a Personal Trainer | Athletic Trainer

To succeed as a personal trainer with a thriving business and plenty of return customers, you not only have to play the part, you have to look the part. This means that if you?re going to teach people how to be fit, you have to look fit. You don?t have to be Ms. Body Beautiful, but you must give off the impression that you lead a healthy lifestyle. Look fabulously fit so you exude credibility and confidence. So rule # 1: shape up first!

Becoming a Personal Trainer: Factors to Consider If you want to become a personal trainer and set up your own business, here are factors to consider:

1. Do you have the personality and patience for hand-holding people who are easily discouraged and de-motivated? An effective personal trainer needs to be a nurturing and caring fitness coach. The idea is to consistently encourage and enforce a positive attitude. You must guide them in their weight goals so that they don?t have unrealistic expectations.

2. Sign up with a personal trainer and see how he or she trains. In fact, if you can afford it, sign up with several trainers and pick up on their good qualities/techniques. Alternatively, you can do a tour of four or five gyms in your area and observe how trainers conduct their sessions. You may also ask the gym manager what his criteria are for hiring personal trainers.

3. Get certified as a personal trainer ? most fitness clubs don?t hire non-certified personal trainers. Personal trainers need to know about kinesiology, physical fitness, sports medicine and the muscular-skeletal system. This doesn?t mean you need degrees in each, but your certification classes will teach you a little bit of everything. Also, if you can specialize, the better your chances are for your business to reach more clients. Specializing means going beyond physical fitness training; you may want to learn how to conduct rehabilitation exercises for people who had accidents or for people with chronic pain.

4. As for logistics, you need to look into: whether your business is a partnership or single proprietorship, getting a business permit and deciding if you?ll set it up from home or rent a location. You need to get personal liability insurance and learn marketing.

5. Target market ? opportunities for personal trainers are abundant, even in tough economic times. Health is an ongoing concern, no matter what one?s financial health is. Decide if you want to target your community, the corporate world, spa resorts, or people needing physical rehabilitation. You can also target government clients or private clinics, hospitals and sports medicine establishments.

6. Define your marketing strategies ? you need to market yourself effectively and this involves marketing your services at minimum cost. Decide if you want to send direct mail, post flyers in your neighborhood supermarket, library and sports arenas or make cold calls. You can also create a web site or have brochures printed and leave them at corporate offices ? if you want to service this particular niche.

7. Establish a word-of-mouth referral system ? let?s face it. People would be a little hesitant to run their fingers through the yellow pages. Word-of-mouth recommendations are as important as marketing yourself. Let others do the marketing for you by providing excellent, courteous and knowledgeable service. Stay on top of the latest training methods and have testimonials ready in case potential clients ask to see them.

8. Volunteer ? a great way to establish a network of contacts is to volunteer time and effort in community activities. For example, if there?s a fund- raising campaign to buy new sports equipment, offer your services to campaign organizers by saying you?ll give free 10-minute demonstrations or do a free three-minute massage for donors! This is a great way to hand out your business card.

Gaza flotilla report blames Israel and Turkey (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Last year's Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla was "excessive and unreasonable" according to a U.N. panel that also blamed Turkey and flotilla organizers for contributing to the deaths of nine activists.

The panel's long-delayed report, released late Friday, was aimed at improving Israeli-Turkish relations, but has already led to a near rupture because of Israel's refusal to apologize for the deaths aboard the Mavi Marmara, the largest of the six vessels in the flotilla.

Earlier Friday, Turkey expelled the Israeli ambassador and suspended military cooperation.

The 105-page report said Israel's naval blockade of Gaza was legally imposed "as a legitimate security measure" to prevent weapons smuggling, but added that the killing of eight Turkish activists and a Turkish-American was "unacceptable."

"The events of May 31, 2010 should never have taken place as they did and strenuous efforts should be made to prevent the occurrence of such incidents in the future," the report said.

Israel insists its forces acted in self defense and says there will be no apology. Israeli officials pointed out the report does not demand an apology. Rather, it says "an appropriate statement of regret should be made by Israel in respect of the incident in light of its consequences."

The panel criticized Israel for failing to give "clear prior warning" that the vessels were to be boarded and failing to use "non-violent options" in the first instance.

The report also called on Israel to offer payment "of a sufficient amount" to the injured and families of the dead through a joint trust fund administered by the two governments.

But the panel also found the flotilla "acted recklessly in attempting to breach the naval blockade." While the majority of flotilla participants had no violent intentions, it said, "there exist serious questions about the conduct, true nature and objectives of the flotilla organizers."

As for the Turkish government, the panel said, it should have done more to warn flotilla participants of "the potential risks involved and dissuade them from their actions."

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon thanked the panel and the Israelis and Turks for cooperating with it, but made no comment on the substance of the report.

U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey later said Ban had hoped the inquiry and report would bring Israel and Turkey back together and "deeply regrets the fact that this has not been possible."

The panel's chair, former New Zealand Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer, and co-chair, former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, adopted the report. But the Israeli representative Joseph Ciechanover and Turkish representative Ozdem Sanberk, disagreed with parts of it that were critical of their countries in separate statements distributed with the report.

Ciechanover protested that Israel's decision to have commandos rappel on to the vessel was not "excessive and unreasonable," saying the panel was provided evidence of repeated warnings it gave the Mavi Marmara of its intention to board.

Given the resistance from some passengers on the vessel, he said, "Israel's soldiers clearly acted in self-defense and responded reasonably, proportionally and with restraint, including the use of less-lethal weapons where feasible."

Sanberk strongly disagreed with the panel's finding that the Gaza blockade is legal, citing a U.N. Human Rights Council report calling it unlawful as well as the right to freedom of the high seas.

The intentions of the flotilla were humanitarian and participants "resisted for their own protection," he said. "One of the victims is still in a coma" and the report did not adequately describe "the actual extent of the atrocities that the victims have been subjected to."

Personal Bankruptcy ? Advice From An ... - Port of Hodiedah Finance

Unfortunately, for reasons either in or out of their control, some people are faced with the difficult decision to file for bankruptcy. Due to a variety of factors, they are no longer able to manage their financial responsibilities, whether through illness, being laid off, or making poor choices with their money. When the heap of debt is too much to bear any longer, then a short-term solution that some choose is personal bankruptcy. It is a way to clear some debt and get situated once again. Often, it is the last resort of those attempting to get back on their feet, and if you are considering it, there are pros and cons of filing for personal bankruptcy.

It will likely pain you to hear it, but one of the cons of filing for bankruptcy is that you will probably lose the fun stuff you have acquired. Along with those items deemed non-essential, you will have to give up all credit cards. That is unless they have been paid off before the filing occurred. Although you are no longer able to keep extraneous items, the good news is that you no longer have to feel the pressure of collection actions taken by creditors. You also will not face repossessions, garnishments, or foreclosures.

Another con to filing for bankruptcy is that some assume that all debt is cleared. This is not so, and student loans are a good example. They do not go away, ever. Neither do back taxes from the previous three years. Granted, the student loans will have to be paid back eventually, but one of the pros of the situation is that aggressive collection actions on them will end. If filed through an attorney, the lawyer acts as a sort of shield against harassing calls and uncomfortable situations, but between credit counseling fees, trustee fees, and attorney fees, the cost can really add up.

One of the largest drawbacks of personal bankruptcy is the smear left behind on your credit rating. This mark will remain there for 10 years, and that will make the acquisition of additional loans either rather expensive or flat out impossible. This can present a significant problem, because both houses and cars are sometimes lost in a bankruptcy settlement. Looking at the positives, however, bankruptcy provides immediate help to enable you to once again obtain a house and a car further down the line.

Filing for bankruptcy is often a scary and painful choice, but it is an option that is meant to help. This help comes with a price, of course, most significantly a credit rating that will cause you hardship in the near future. In the long run, however, a huge pile of debt is cleared out of the way, leaving you with a clearer path towards financial recovery. As with many things in the world, there are pros and cons of filing for bankruptcy.
