No. 13 Indiana rallies past No. 2 Ohio St. 74-70 (AP)

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ? Indiana did it again. Three weeks after upsetting No. 1 Kentucky, the Hoosiers took down No. 2 Ohio State.

Victor Oladipo scored the go-ahead basket with 36 seconds left Saturday and Jordan Hulls finished with 17 points, giving the No. 13 Hoosiers a 74-70 victory ? the school's first-ever sweep of the nation's top two teams.

"They've been punking us the past couple years and we realized that," Oladipo said. "This year we had to go toe-to-toe with them."

The Hoosiers (13-1, 1-1 Big Ten) didn't back down.

Indiana became the ninth team since 1996-97 to beat No. 1 and No. 2 in the same season and joined Kansas in 2007-08 and Louisville in 2003-04 as the only teams over that span to achieve the feat in the same month. Against Kentucky, the Hoosiers needed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Christian Watford to win it.

On Saturday, the Hoosiers needed Oladipo's layup, three free throws from Hulls and Watford, a rebound from Watford and a steal from Oladipo in the final 36 seconds to seal it.

Ohio State (13-2, 1-1) was led by Aaron Craft with 16 points and Jared Sullinger with 15 points and nine rebounds, but it wasn't enough to extend their five-game winning streak or the school record six-game winning streak against the Hoosiers.

The Buckeyes spent most of the day buried in foul trouble, and never could quite dig themselves out.

They squandered an early 19-9 lead, watching the Hoosiers close the half by converting back-to-back turnovers into easy baskets. That gave Indiana a 33-32 lead.

It was the same story in the second half.

Ohio State looked as if it might pull away after taking a 44-41 lead with 15:33 left, but the continual foul problems allowed Indiana to hang around.

The Buckeyes took a 68-67 lead when Sullinger made the basket, drew the fifth foul on Cody Zeller and then capped it with a free throw.

Jones answered with a layup to make it 69-68 and then Ohio State's Deshaun Thomas made a 15-foot jumper to give the Buckeyes a one-point lead with 1:51 to go.

That's how it stayed until Hulls forced a turnover with a deflection, and Jones tossed the ball up the court to Oladipo for a layup and a 71-70 lead with 36 seconds left.

Ohio State called its final timeout to set up a play, but Craft's bounce pass went through the hands of Sam Thompson. Hulls made 1 of 2 free throws after getting fouled.

William Buford's 3-pointer would have given Ohio State the lead again with about 5 seconds to go, but Watford grabbed the errant shot and made two free throws to seal it.

(AP) ? NASA says its twin spacecraft are now circling the moon on a mission to measure lunar gravity.

The latest probe slipped into orbit on New Year's Day, joining its twin, which arrived a day earlier.

The Grail spacecraft ? short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory ? will spend the next two months spiraling closer to the surface. In March, they will begin mapping the moon's uneven gravity field from orbit to understand its interior down to the core.

The probes were launched in September and took a roundabout trip to the moon.

Chile detains Israeli tourist in major forest fire (AP)

SANTIAGO, Chile ? A 23-year-old Israeli tourist has been detained on suspicion of causing a forest fire that has burned more than 42 square miles (11,000 hectares) in Chile's Torres de Paine national park, authorities announced Saturday.

Regional prosecutor Juan Melendez identified the person as Roter Singer, though Israel Radio later gave the first name is Rotem. Melendez said the man had acknowledged a part in negligently allowing the fire to start.

More than 560 firefighters have been trying to contain the fire, which forced the evacuation of 400 tourists, most of them foreigners. About 150,000 people each year visit the 925-square-mile (240,000-hectare) park in far-southern Chile.

Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter said an easing of winds was helping firefighters on Saturday, but conditions were expected to worsen Sunday and Monday. The government declared a state of emergency for the region on Friday.

Jobless claims show labor market improving

By Msnbc.com staff and wire

New claims for jobless benefits jumped for the first time in four weeks, the government reported Thursday, but the overall trend for the labor market remains positive going into the new year.

The Labor Department said?seasonally adjusted initial claims rose 15,000 to 381,000 in the week that ended Dec. 24, up from a revised 366,000 the prior week. The four-week moving average, considered a more accurate gauge of labor market trends, fell 5,750 to 375,000, however.

Despite the increase in the latest week's data, jobless claims remain below 400,000, a key signpost for economists showing that layoffs have tapered off, although hiring still is lackluster.

"We've seen a pretty strong trend in claims recently. This finally shows they're correcting to a sustainable downtrend," Gennadiy Goldberg, interest-rate strategist at 4CAST, told Reuters.

Hiring has improved in recent months. Employers have added an average of 143,000 net jobs a month from September through November. That's almost double the average for the previous three months.

Next year should be even better. A survey of 36 economists by the Associated Press this month found that they expect the economy will generate an average of about 175,000 jobs per month in 2012.

More small businesses plan to hire than at any time in three years, a trade group said earlier this month. And a separate private-sector survey found more companies are planning to add workers in the first quarter of next year than at any time since 2008.

In November, the unemployment rate fell to 8.6 percent from 9 percent. Still, about half that decline occurred because many of the unemployed gave up looking for work. When people stop looking for a job, they're no longer counted as unemployed.

The pickup in hiring reflects some modest improvement in the economy. Growth will likely top 3 percent at an annual rate in the final three months of this year, economists expect. That would be better than the 1.8 percent growth in the July-September quarter.

Still, Europe is almost certain to fall into recession because of its financial troubles. And without more jobs and higher incomes, consumers may have to cut back on spending. Both could drag on growth next year.

Congress removed one potential threat last week when it agreed to extend a payroll tax cut and to keep emergency unemployment benefits for two additional months. Both programs were scheduled to expire at the end of this month. Economists worried that ending the tax break and the extended unemployment benefits program would have left Americans with less money to spend.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

CNBC's Rick Santelli analyzes this week's jobless claims, coming in at 381,000 - up 15,000 from last week. Santelli also weighs in on currencies, specifically the euro vs the dollar.
