Observing the galaxy distribution when the universe was half its current age

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? At the UK-Germany National Astronomy Meeting NAM2012, the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) team has just announced the most accurate measurement yet of the distribution of galaxies between five and six billion years ago. This was the key 'pivot' moment at which the expansion of the universe stopped slowing down due to gravity and started to accelerate instead, due to a mysterious force dubbed "dark energy." The nature of this "dark energy" is one of the big mysteries in cosmology today, and scientists need precise measurements of the expansion history of the universe to unravel this mystery -- BOSS provides this kind of data. In a set of six joint papers presented March 30, the BOSS team, an international group of scientists with the participation of the Max Planck Institute of Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, Germany, used these data together with previous measurements to place tight constraints on various cosmological models.

The BOSS survey, which is a part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III), was started in 2009 to probe the universe at a time when dark energy started to dominate. The survey will continue until 2014, collecting data for 1.35 million galaxies with a custom-designed new spectrograph on the 2.5-metre Sloan Telescope at the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico, USA. In the first year-and-a-half, it has already mapped the three-dimensional positions of more than a quarter of a million galaxies spread across about one tenth of the sky, yielding the most accurate and complete map of the galaxy distribution up to a distance of about 6 billion light years.

Galaxies form a "cosmic web" with a variety of structures which encode valuable information about our universe. One particular feature, the so-called "Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations" (BAO), has been subject of much interest from scientists as it provides them with a "standard rod." BAO are a relic of the early phases of the universe, when it was a hot and dense "soup" of particles. Small variations of density travelled through this "soup" as pressure-driven (sound) waves. As the universe expanded and cooled, the pressure dropped, causing these waves to stall after they had traveled about 500 million light years. These frozen waves imprinted a particular signature on the matter distribution and are visible in the galaxy map today: it is in fact slightly more probable to find pairs of galaxies separated by this scale than at smaller or larger distances.

Measurements of the apparent size of the BAO scale in the galaxy distribution then provide information about cosmic distances. Combined with the measurement of the galaxies' redshift -- a measure for how fast they move away as a result of the cosmic expansion -- scientists can then reconstruct the expansion history of the universe.

The new BOSS data, combined with previous analyses, can now constrain the parameters of the standard cosmological model to an accuracy of better than five per cent. "All the different lines of evidence point to the same explanation," says Dr. Ariel Sanchez, scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics and lead author of one of the six new papers. "The dark energy is consistent with Einstein's cosmological constant: a small but irreducible energy continually stretching space itself, driving the accelerated expansion of the universe."

Besides dark energy, the information encoded in the large-scale distribution of galaxies can be used to obtain robust constraints on other important physical parameters such as the curvature of the universe, the neutrino mass, or the phase of inflation in the very early universe. "Current observations show that the universe has to be flat, to an accuracy better than 0.5 per cent," says Ariel Sanchez. "And at the same time as we measure such a global parameter on a cosmic scale, we can also get information about neutrinos on the smallest scales in the cosmos."

Neutrinos are tiny, subatomic particles. Even though a number of experiments have shown that they must have mass, scientists do not know how much they actually weigh, as it is difficult to measure this in a laboratory. However, as an additional component in the hot, early phase of the universe the neutrinos affect the growth of structures. The galaxy distribution probed by BOSS provides information about the maximum mass that these neutrinos are allowed to have. "This is really the connection of two extreme worlds, the very large and the very small," adds Ariel Sanchez.

The quality of the new data even provided the BOSS team with new clues about cosmic inflation, a period of time shortly after the Big Bang during which the universe expanded at an incredible rate. During cosmic inflation, small regions of space were blown out to form our entire observable universe. At the same time, tiny quantum fluctuations also expanded and became the seeds of the structures that the BOSS data show us today. "There is a real zoo of alternative models of inflation. With BOSS we get important new clues about the inflationary phase of the universe, which allows us to pare down the market of available models," remarks Ariel Sanchez.

So far, all measurements are highly consistent with the standard cosmological model, which is made up of a few per cent ordinary matter, about a quarter of dark matter, and the rest dark energy. But Ariel Sanchez is cautious: "This is just the beginning. We can expect much tighter constraints once we have the full five years of BOSS data. There are also a number of future projects, such as EUCLID, that will provide even better measurements, bringing us one step closer to finding answers to the big open questions in cosmology."

Clinton: Time running out for diplomacy with Iran

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made clear Saturday that time is running out for diplomacy over Iran's nuclear program and said talks aimed at preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon would resume in mid-April.

With speculation over a possible U.S. or Israel military attack adding urgency to the next round of discussions in Istanbul set for April 13, Clinton said Iran's "window of opportunity" for a peaceful resolution "will not remain open forever."

She also expressed doubt about whether Iran has any intention of negotiating a solution that satisfies the U.S., Israel and other countries that believe Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran contends the program is solely for peaceful energy and research purposes.

"We're going in with one intention: to resolve the international community's concerns about Iran's nuclear program," Clinton told reporters after attending a security conference in Saudi Arabia.

"Our policy is one of prevention, not containment. We are determined to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," America's top diplomat said.

"We enter into these talks with a sober perspective about Iran's intentions. It is incumbent upon Iran to demonstrate by its actions that it is a willing partner and to participate in these negotiations with an effort to obtain concrete results."

Her remarks followed President Barack Obama's announcement Friday that the U.S. was moving ahead with penalties aimed at depriving Iran of oil revenue, while also working with Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states to ensure ample global petroleum supplies.

Clinton prodded Gulf governments to develop a coordinated defense strategy against Iranian missiles. With tensions rising in the region, she said American and Gulf militaries should cooperate to improve maritime security as well.

Underscoring the limits of U.S.-Gulf cooperation, however, U.S. officials confirmed Saturday that the United Arab Emirates had shut down an American-funded democracy group, following similar Emirates action against a German organization this past week.

Discussions also covered ways to pressure Syrian President Bashar Assad to end a year of bloodshed from the uprising against his rule, but the focus was on Iran.

"It soon will be clear whether Iran's leaders are prepared to have a serious, credible discussion about their nuclear program, whether they are ready to start building the basis of a resolution to this very serious problem," Clinton said. "It is up to Iran whether they are ready to make the right choice. ... What is certain is that Iran's window of opportunity to seek and obtain a peaceful resolution will not remain open forever."

She said pressure from the economic penalties and international isolation was increasing on Iran to show it is serious about satisfying the world's concerns.

Iran and the six nations involved in the negotiations? the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China ? met in Istanbul 14 months ago. But the talks ended after two days with the sides unable to even agree on what to talk about.

Iran has used past talks to delay sanctions or try to divide the international front, while pressing ahead with its nuclear program.

Obama has underlined the need to give time for diplomacy alongside penalties. He said Friday that the U.S. would move ahead with potential measures against U.S. allies and other countries that keep buying Iranian oil. It was the latest step in the campaign to starve Iran of money for its nuclear activity.

The president said the world oil market was tight, but deep enough to keep the squeeze on Iran.

Clinton, who met Friday for almost two hours with Saudi King Abdullah, said the U.S. and Saudi Arabia share an interest in ensuring stable energy markets that foster economic growth.

She recognized the kingdom's efforts to meet increased market demand for countries weaning themselves off Iranian petroleum imports. She also said the U.S. and Sunni governments of the region would cooperate to counter Iranian threats against shipping in the Gulf and Tehran's support for "the Assad regime's murderous campaign."

Before heading to Turkey for a 60-nation "Friends of the Syrian People" meeting Sunday, Clinton lamented what she called the Assad government's shelling of civilian neighborhoods and targeting of mosques and churches.

She said these attacks have continued despite Assad's acceptance of U.N. mediator Kofi Annan's plan to end the crisis. That plan includes an immediate cease-fire and an eventual democratic transition.

In a concluding statement, the U.S. and the other countries at Saturday's meeting urged Annan to issue a timeline for putting his plan in place.

Western diplomats want to give diplomacy a chance, having invested months of effort to persuade Russia and China, veto-holding members of the U.N. Security Council, to unite behind a common approach. But they, like the Syrian opposition, fear Assad may only be playing for time.

Assad said he wants the plan to succeed, but insists the opposition must first commit to a cease-fire.

The West says the Syrian government must pull back its troops first, and U.S. officials say much of the diplomacy right now concerns the choreography of how the two sides would lay down their arms.

More than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria's violence since last March, according to U.N. estimates.

Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar are among the most impatient and have spoken about possible military intervention, from arming Syria's badly overmatched rebels to creating safe zones from which the rebels can operate.

"I believe we all agree on the need for an immediate cease-fire to the systematic killing," Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said at a news conference with Clinton.

He said the Syrian government's crackdown has "reached the level, at the very least described as crimes against humanity, on which the international community should not remain silent."

Washington fears a military escalation could lead to all-out civil war and play into Assad's hands, considering his vastly more powerful military.

Clinton said officials meeting in Turkey would discuss "additional steps to increase pressure on the regime, provide humanitarian assistance despite the efforts of the regime to block access and advance plans for an inclusive, democratic and orderly transition that addresses the aspirations of the Syrian people."

Clinton also expressed concern about increased pressure across the region on civic groups, in particular those advocating political or democratic reforms. It was an apparent reference to the Emirates' move this past week against the U.S.-based National Democratic Institute and Germany's Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

Titanic 'Still Sinks' In 3-D, James Cameron Confirms

'Jack still dies,' director says of the 3-D re-release which he says 'reinvents' the 1997 flick.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

When "Titanic" hits the big screen again on April 4, the ship will be changing course and heading directly into the audience. Director James Cameron has been one of 3-D's biggest proponents for years now and has suggested in the past that any film is open for a three-dimensional makeover. It only makes sense, then, that he put his money where his mouth is and converted his own "Titanic."

Cameron spoke with MTV UK about the process and why the real reward of the re-release is the chance to see his blockbuster on the silver screen again after 15 years.

The director insisted that the movie remains as it was back in 1997, except for the added dimension. "It ends the same way. The ship still sinks. Jack still dies. Oops, I hope I didn't spoil it," he said.

As Cameron has said before, he believes that the 3-D element of the re-release plays a supporting role. He simply wants people to see "Titanic" as it was meant to be seen: in a theater. "I think the first thing you should think of, the most important thing, is that you're going to see it in a movie theater, which is really fundamentally different for anyone who is under a certain age. It hasn't been in a theater for fifteen years, so people know it from video. But they haven't taken that ride where you commit to the three hours, and you're going to go on that emotional rollercoaster, and you're going to come out of the end of the movie in a certain mental, emotional state. It's very different."

That isn't the say that the 3-D doesn't add anything. Cameron sees the conversion as a way to reinterpret the experience. "The 3-D is a kind of way of doing that, a way of reinventing the film, and the 3-D does add something to the experience that was never there before, an immediacy, even an intimacy, which is interesting."

Luckily for Cameron, he had originally shot "Titanic" in a way that was conducive to a 3-D conversion. "Even though I wasn't shooting it as a 3-D movie 15 years ago, my particular style is to use wider lenses and to wrap the actors in the scenery," Cameron said. "Because the ship — I don't like to use the term that it was a character — but the environment was constantly informing what was happening, the elegance, the beauty of the ship, the gilt-edged luxury juxtaposed with steerage third class. All those themes are really manifested in the physicality of the ship. The style of seeing all of that when you convert it to 3-D, it just has this lucidity. You just feel like you're there."

One game is a grudge match between teams that know each other all too well. The other is a rare rematch between virtual strangers.

The Final Four is set. In one game Saturday, Kentucky will play Louisville in an intrastate rivalry that puts Cardinals coach Rick Pitino against the school he once coached, then later alienated by returning to the Bluegrass to lead its archrival.

In the other semifinal, it will be Ohio State and Kansas, meeting for only the ninth time in their history but for the second time this season. The Jayhawks won the first game 78-67 in Lawrence, Kan., back on Dec. 10. Ohio State's Jared Sullinger sat out of that game with back spasms. It was the first time the teams had met since 1999-2000.

The winners will play for the national title April 2. Kentucky already has seven national titles but none since 1998, the year after Pitino left. Kansas has three championships, Louisville has two and Ohio State, better known as a football power, won its lone title in 1960 and is making its third trip to the Final Four since 1999.

Absent from this year's ultimate hoops weekend, taking place at the Superdome in New Orleans, are the longshots and little guys who have made March Madness so special over the years. Although there are no Butlers, VCUs or George Masons, there are plenty of good stories to tell. That list starts with Pitino vs. his old school.

It was Pitino who restored Kentucky to its former greatness when he arrived there in 1989 and the Wildcat program was coming off the sting of NCAA violations. Pitino took the program to three Final Fours and won one championship, but left in 1997 to take a second shot at the NBA, where he had previously coached the New York Knicks.

He fared far worse in four seasons with the Boston Celtics, and when the call back to the college game came, it came from Louisville, located only 70 miles up the road from Lexington and very much in the crosshairs of Kentucky fans. It has been 11 years since his dramatic return, and most of the shock has worn off from what was once deemed an unforgivable betrayal. But there's nothing like a Final Four meeting to stir up some old memories.

"It is in our state. They're a great program. We're in two different leagues," Kentucky coach John Calipari said after the Wildcats beat Baylor 82-70 in the South Regional to advance to the Final Four for the second straight year. "The city of Louisville drives our state. The University of Louisville drives that city. So it's a very important thing for our state, and it's important that that school does well."

Maybe just not next Saturday.

The teams play every season, and most recently, they were ranked Nos. 3 and 4 in The Associated Press poll when they met on New Year's Eve. Kentucky won at home 69-62. Now, it's top-seeded Kentucky against Louisville, a No. 4 and the worst-seeded team in the Final Four.

"We think they're excellent. We think they're great. I coached there. It's great. Great tradition," Pitino said Saturday, after Louisville rallied for a 72-68 win over Florida that put the Cardinals in the Final Four for the second time since the coach arrived. "But we want to be Louisville. We have a different mission. They have a different mission. But we both want to get to a Final Four and win a championship."

Led by a group of freshmen who may or may not return for a second year, Kentucky was established as an early 8.5-point favorite in the game. The Wildcats endured a brief scare when freshman Anthony Davis, their leading scorer, went down hard in the second half against Baylor with an injured knee. But it was only a knee-to-knee collision with a Baylor player and the injury isn't expected to be serious.

"The guys told me it was knee to knee," Calipari said of the early report from the trainers. "I said, 'Get up, mama's boy,' and he was fine."

Pitino's team does not have as many NBA-ready stars as Calipari's, but they are Final Four material. A series of injuries and starts and stops led to a 10-8 Big East regular season that impressed no one. But the coach kept believing and coaxing. The Cardinals won the Big East tournament and are two wins away from winning the NCAAs, too.

"I really didn't have any lofty expectations, because we had so many injuries," Pitino said. "We were just trying to survive during the season. We just wanted to make the tournament and start fresh."

In the other semifinal, Sullinger got what he wanted when he decided to return to Ohio State for his sophomore year ? a trip to the Final Four. The Buckeyes are early 2.5-point picks over Kansas in the matchup of No. 2 seeds.

They finished in a three-way tie for first in the Big Ten, widely viewed as the toughest conference in basketball this year, but settled for a No. 2 seed in the NCAAs after losing the conference tournament final to Michigan State. It wasn't the first or last time critics underestimated Thad Matta's team this season.

"People were asking, are we mentally tough enough, are we physically tough enough, can we do this, can we do that?" Sullinger said. "I relayed those questions back to the team. We did some soul searching, and now we've taken this to a whole other level."

Sullinger scored 19 points Saturday in Ohio State's 77-70 win over Syracuse to make the Final Four.

Tyshawn Taylor scored 22 points Sunday in an 80-67 win over North Carolina to lock in the matchup against the Buckeyes. The Jayhawks reached the Final Four for the first time since 2008, when they won it all after rallying from nine points late in the title game to beat Memphis (and Calipari, before he moved to Kentucky) in overtime.

Taylor finished with 13 assists in the Dec. 10 game against Ohio State despite playing with an ailing knee.

The Buckeyes, meanwhile, had to do without Sullinger. Playing their first road game of the season, they lost by 11 to drop to 8-1.

Seems like quite a long time ago.

"We caught a break the first time when Jared didn't play, and we were kind of finding ourselves," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "We knew they were a team that could make a run and win a national championship. They have so many pieces that are so good. It starts with Jared."

They're then able to read all of them and respond in their own period. This means you can achieve more people through advertising in this manner. The professionals at seenBest Web Design in Phoenix, Arizona, have the experience and skills to design an e-mail that gets outcomes.

Make use of a good e-mail service provider (Especially) that provides assistance and statistics about which email addresses aren't in use as well as which emails bounce back, after which delete. These types of messages can include show occasions as well as blurbs associated with reviews and links to the movies' official web sites, all of which makes the email a uniquely interactive experience. The exclusion might be using a content management system for your website and then keeping this updated along with timely and relevant posts to a blog.

If your business puts out new products as well as services on a regular basis, then it's however logical that you send email messages more often. Plus a targeted email advertising campaign can monitor how many readers opened the email and clicked your hyperlink. These administrative functions ought to be embedded in each and every email, generally at the bottom so that they don't have to look for it.

In the end the effectiveness of auto responding e-mails is depending on them appearing to be personally created communications directly from you. By customizing the email you make your client feel special and not just a number. Have your fans fill out the form using their name and email address.

If you rent your email marketing services, this means that you only suffer from one organization and one website. Unlike consumer marketing where clients are innumerable, clients are easily recognized and restricted in any Business to business.

Primarily, you may ask, the reason why try to acquire free traffic instead of paying for it? Give the future prospect what they want and they'll keep on returning for more. As well as discount outlets such as Large Lots and Ocean State Job Great deal offer good furniture in a reduced price, a hard combination to overcome in attempting economic occasions.

French gunman's brother suspected of complicity

PARIS (Reuters) - The brother of an al Qaeda-inspired gunman shot dead by French police was placed under investigation on Sunday for suspected complicity in a killing spree that has made security a central election issue, with President Nicolas Sarkozy scenting an advantage.

Sarkozy, buoyed by a rise in opinion polls four weeks from the first round of a presidential vote, renewed hostilities with rival Francois Hollande over the weekend, saying the Socialist front runner was unfit to protect France's security interests.

Both men are seeking to adjust to - and in Sarkozy's case to capitalize on - the bloody drama in which Mohamed Merah killed three Jewish children, a rabbi and three soldiers before he was killed by police snipers after a marathon siege and a gunbattle.

After four days of police questioning, prosecutors said that Abdelkader Merah, the killer's older brother, was being placed under investigation on suspicion of complicity and would remain in detention for the duration of a inquiry that could last months before a decision to send him to trial or drop the case.

Abdelkader, 29, was arrested at dawn on Wednesday as elite police commandos surrounded the apartment of brother Mohamed in the southwestern city of Toulouse.

He was transferred to domestic intelligence headquarters in western Paris on Saturday along with his woman partner, who was released without charge shortly before dawn on Sunday.

Mohamed Merah, 23, a French citizen of Algerian origin, was killed by a police sniper as he jumped from the balcony of his lodgings, pistol firing, after a standoff of more than 30 hours and a gunbattle inside his three-room apartment.

He did not appear to have acted as part of a fundamentalist network, according to domestic intelligence chief Bernard Squarcini, but investigators want to establish whether he was swayed or given practical help by his brother Abdelkader.

Abdelkader, public prosecutor Francois Molins has said, was already known to security services for helping smuggle Jihadist militants into Iraq in 2007.

"Police inquiries have produced serious and matching pointers that suggest his (Abdelkader's) participation as an accomplice in crimes relating to a terrorist enterprise is plausible," the Paris prosecutor's office said in a statement.

It listed suspected offences of complicity in assassination and in robbery, and colluding with criminals planning terrorist enterprises.

Abdelkader said during a preliminary police interrogation he was proud of his brother's lethal exploits, and he also admitted to involvement in the March 6 robbery of a high-powered scooter his brother used in all three attacks, police sources say.

But his lawyer, Anne-Sophie Laguens, told journalists on Sunday: "He never said he was proud of his brother's acts and firmly condemns them."

Francois Molins, the prosecutor leading the case, has said police had found explosives in a car Abdelkader owned.

Abdelkader was known to have studied the Koran in Egypt in 2010 and French police had in the past found links between the brothers and a radical Islamist group based in southern France led by a Syrian-born Frenchman dubbed "The White Emir" by French media because of his fair hair and beard.

ELECTION BATTLES RENEWED

With the opening round of a two-round election just a month away, Sarkozy kept the focus at the weekend on security, a theme that, after gatecrashing the agenda last week, may help him in his re-election quest if it sticks as a voter worry.

Three-quarters of French voters said in a poll published on Saturday they approved Sarkozy's handling of the crisis. The president has promised new laws to criminally punish people who consult militant website or do indoctrination stints in places such as Pakistan and Afghanistan, which Mohamed Merah visited.

At a rally on the outskirts of Paris on Saturday, Sarkozy took a stab at Hollande's reluctance to back his proposed laws.

"He can cry foul, fiddle around, hesitate, skirt the issues and alter the finer points. He can refuse to vote for laws that I am proposing to protect France and the French people. But let me tell you that these laws will be adopted if the French choose to place their trust in me," he said.

Hollande, reduced to a bystander last week while Sarkozy reverted from campaigner to the role of president at the height of the killings crisis, struck back during a visit to the French island of Corsica off the southern coast, which has a long and violent history of racketeering and separatist struggles.

"Here's a place which has been subjected to violence and assassinations over the past five years. There are 20 homicides a year and he (Nicolas Sarkozy) sees fit to give us lessons about security and the law?" Hollande asked.

"The law needs to be applied, not reinvented every time according to the circumstances of the time. It's a question of halting splash announcements and giving the police and justice system the resources they need," he said.

Sarkozy has drawn level with Hollande in opinion polls and now even leads him in some surveys of voter plans for the first round of voting on April 22, when people can choose between 10 candidates, including the two big contenders.

All polls still show him losing the second-round runoff to Hollande, against whom he launched a personal attack during a conversation with a journalist that was reported at the weekend.

Philippe Ridet, a journalist who wrote a book about the 2007 victory, said in a magazine article that Sarkozy had taken him aside one time to say: "I am going to win and I am even going to tell you why. He's not good and it's starting to show. Hollande is useless. Useless, you understand."

(AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez flew to Cuba late Saturday to begin radiation therapy on Sunday, one month after undergoing surgery that removed a cancerous tumor.

He will be in Cuba at the same time as Pope Benedict XVI, who arrives on the communist-governed island on Monday after a visit to Mexico.

Chavez has been recovering from a Feb. 26 surgery in Havana that he said removed a tumor from the same spot in his pelvic region where another tumor was extracted eight months earlier.

"Tonight, I'm leaving for Havana," he said in a televised meeting with aides Saturday. "I've decided, on the recommendation of my medical team and also my government political team, to begin now, as we're going to begin on Sunday, radiation therapy treatment."

Chavez described it as a "complement to the surgery that I underwent" last month.

"Yesterday, they took out the last stitches that were left from the operation. Everything's very good. I've been walking much better. ... Without any sort of complication, thanks to God," he said. "And now, a month after the operation, we're ready for radiation therapy, which will last about four, five weeks."

Chavez arrived at Caracas' international airport Saturday night and held the hand of one of his daughters as he walked past soldiers standing at attention.

"I'll be back in a few days," he said. "You all know, you should know that radiation therapy is for various days, and after that a break, and after that other days and another break. So I'm going to be going and coming. It's possible that we may do some of the sessions here in Venezuela. We're evaluating it. What's most important, whether its there or here, is the effectiveness of the treatment."

Chavez didn't refer to the pope's upcoming visit to Cuba.

The 57-year-old president describes himself as a Christian. He has regularly clashed with Roman Catholic leaders in Venezuela, but during his illness has often publicly expressed faith in God that he will overcome cancer.

Chavez has not identified the type of cancer nor the location in his pelvic region where the tumors have been removed.

After he was diagnosed with cancer in Cuba last year, Chavez underwent an initial surgery in June that removed a tumor the size of a baseball.

He then had four rounds of chemotherapy and said tests showed no signs of any cancerous cells. But last month, he announced he was returning to Cuba for surgery to remove a lesion that proved to be malignant. He has described the most recent tumor as measuring about 2 centimeters (0.8 inches).

Chavez had said earlier this month that he would undergo radiation therapy but had not given details about when it would begin or where he would be treated.

Chavez is running for re-election in October and vows that his illness will not get in the way of that political goal.

His rival, opposition leader Henrique Capriles, has criticized Chavez's handling of his cancer, saying that the president should be releasing complete details about the illness.

Chavez defended his decision to return to Cuba rather than undergo radiation treatment at home. He said he will be treated at the same medical center in Havana where his cancer was originally detected and where he had both of his operations.

"I know that this decision surely will be criticized by some embittered spokespeople of the opposition. However, I'm sure ... in this decision the great majority of Venezuelans are with me," Chavez said.

Last year, Chavez shaved his head during chemotherapy after his hair began falling out as a result of the treatments.

Now, as he starts radiation therapy, some of the potential side effects of the treatments include fatigue, abdominal cramping, nausea or vomiting, said Dr. Michael Pishvaian, an oncologist at Georgetown University's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center who is not involved in Chavez's treatment.

The radiation is usually administered for a short period on a daily basis, Pishvaian said. "I would imagine that he probably could go about his daily activities even being a president."

Following radiation therapy, patients typically need two weeks to a month to recover from the effects of the treatment, Pishvaian said. "Then he should actually be pretty much back to normal, but will be on sort of high alert for watching to see if the cancer comes back again."

As Chavez was finishing his televised remarks, he said: "I'm leaving to continue this battle, the battle for life."
