Religious Israeli government party wary of war with Iran

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An ultra-Orthodox Jewish party in Israel's coalition government is wary of plans for possible military strikes on Iran, political sources said on Thursday.

Reservations by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the top spiritual authority for the Shas party, could be an obstacle to any attempt by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to get security cabinet approval for hitting Iran's nuclear sites.

"He believes the price would be too high, and for an action that may not achieve its goal," said a person briefed on discussions inside the Shas party, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Israeli leaders have long weighed the possible benefits of striking Iran with the operational and diplomatic risks, and officials say Netanyahu's inner council of nine senior ministers is split - a harbinger of deadlock should he seek a vote.

While most ministers might individually be persuaded to reconsider, those from Shas, the third-biggest coalition partner, are subject to Yosef's instructions.

Asked about the rabbi's opposition, which was reported by Israel's Channel 10 television and corroborated to Reuters by two political sources, Shas party leader and deputy prime minister Eli Yishai was reticent.

"I cannot confirm or not confirm any report about Iran. I think that this chatter is doing us great damage," Yishai told Israel's Army Radio in an interview.

But he indicated that Shas - and the Netanyahu government as a whole - had yet to decide on whether to strike the Islamic republic which it believes is developing nuclear weapons technology that could be a threat to Israel's existence.

Netanyahu's office declined comment.

DECISION PENDING

Yosef, a 91-year-old former Israeli chief rabbi, gave a sermon on Saturday calling for next month's Jewish holidays to include prayers for the destruction of Iran, "those evil ones who threaten Israel".

Though often hawkish in tone, Yosef has in the past broken with Israeli ultra-nationalists by calling on Israel to cede occupied land for peace with the Palestinians and spare lives.

Yishai, a member of Netanyahu's inner council and the 14-member security cabinet that would vote on striking Iran, was last year videotaped telling Shas supporters that his worries about a flare-up with Iran and its allies in Lebanon, Gaza and Syria were making it "difficult to sleep".

Despite having an advanced military which is widely reputed to include the region's sole atomic arsenal, Israel would be hard put to fend off a multi-front missile war sparked by an attack on Iran.

Washington, which is pressing the diplomatic rather than military option, has waned Israel against acting unilaterally.

Moshe Yaalon, another deputy Israeli prime minister, said on Wednesday the debate about whether and how to tackle Iran was ongoing.

"The situation today is not the same as a year ago and is not the same as it will be in a month or two months' time," Yaalon told Army Radio.

"So when we will have to discuss the matter - and I hope we will not be forced to take a decision of this type - we will know if we have a majority or we don't have a majority and we will know what we are deciding."

Water pipe smoking has the same respiratory effects as smoking cigarettes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? A new study published in the journal Respirology reveals that water pipe smoking, such as hookah or bong smoking, affects lung function and respiratory symptoms as much as cigarette smoking.

Most users of water pipes and many physicians believe that smoking through a water pipe filters out the toxic components of tobacco and is considerably less harmful than smoking cigarettes.

Led by Mohammad Hossein Boskabady, MD, PhD, of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, researchers set out to compare lung function and respiratory symptoms among water pipe smokers, deep or normal inhalation cigarette smokers, and non-smokers.

Three groups of smokers, including 57 water pipe smokers, 30 deep inhalation cigarette smokers (S-DI), and 51 normal inhalation cigarette smokers (S-NI) were identified and studied. In addition, 44 non-smokers were studied as a control group.

A questionnaire was administered to assess the prevalence and severity of respiratory symptoms and lung function tests performed on smokers and control subjects using a spirometer.

Results showed an increased prevalence and severity of respiratory symptoms among water pipe smokers and cigarette smokers. Similareffects of water pipe smoking and deep inhalation cigarette smoking on respiratory status were found.

Wheezing was present in 23% of water pipe smokers, 30% in S-DI, and 21.6% in S-NI. Chest tightness was present in 36.8% of water pipe smokers, 40% in S-DI, and 29.4% in S-NI. Cough was present in 21% of water pipe smokers, 36..7% of S-DI, and 19.6% of S-NI. Wheezing, chest tightness, and cough only occurred in non-smokers 9.1%, 13.3% and 6.8% respectively.

"Our study is the first report regarding the importance of the method of cigarette smoke inhalation with respect to effects on the respiratory system," Boskabady concludes. "Our findings reveal that there were profound effects of water pipe smoking on lung function values, which were similar to the effects observed in deep inhalation cigarette smokers."

I rather like the idea of this RP, but I do have one question that I would like to get answered :>.

First of all I am most likely going to choose to make an original character instead of taking a pre-made one. Nothing against pre-made characters, it's just that they don't seem as much as my own character instead of the one who made them. My question though is in regard of the apperance(pictures) that can be used. I noticed that it's character FC (face claim) and I don't really enjoy using those, because well... I don't much enjoy doing so. Instead I was wondering if I may draw my own character out. I can make it as realistic as possible and an animated GIF if you'd prefer those.

Also, I think you need to make 10 posts to be able to.

The Difference Between Trauma and Education is Support

For most people there are likely a handful of nuggets of advice or wisdom they have picked up along the way that have stuck with them for one reason or another.

For me, one of those, was the observation someone I respect greatly once made that ?the Difference Between Trauma and Education is Support?.? It was said in reference to the Manager-Employee relationship in the workplace but it also has clear implications for the parent-child dynamic.

In thinking about its implications, I think what is meant by the statement is that when sending someone (either as a manager or a parent) into new territory, the outcome for the individual (trauma or education) is dependent on whether or not support is offered.? Having this knowledge, therefore, has deep and far reaching implications in the chaos we do or do not leave behind as parents and managers.

As parents, we all want to avoid traumatizing our kids.? As a manager, we (hopefully) want the same for the people that work for us (and ultimately, it is in our best interest in terms of employee productivity to do so). ?So what is the meant by the difference between ?trauma? and ?education??? And what does ?support? look like?

Degree of Success in Transmitting Support is the Outcome Determinant

I think the different outcomes come into sharp focus with an example.? Say your child is starting a new school.? The observation would dictate that the outcome for the child?education or trauma?will turn entirely on our degree of success at expressing support to the child in getting thru the new experience.? Importantly, for us as parents and/or managers, experiential outcomes?trauma or education?occur regardless of our level of involvement/awareness in the child?s/employees experience.

Awareness Leads to Support

All parents and managers want to avoid traumatic experiences for our children and/or employees.? Knowing that the determinant in the outcome of new experiences is the presence of support means we can take steps to ensure the outcome of new experiences are positive rather than traumatic.

Israel court clears military in Rachel Corrie death

An Israeli court on Tuesday cleared the military of any responsibility for the death of US activist Rachel Corrie who was killed by an army bulldozer in 2003, rejecting a civil suit filed by the family.

The family said they were "deeply saddened and deeply troubled" by the verdict, with their lawyer vowing to press ahead with an appeal after a legal battle which has lasted nearly 30 months.

"I reached the conclusion that there was no negligence on the part of the bulldozer driver," said Judge Oded Gershon, reading out a summary of his verdict at Haifa District Court in northern Israel.

He said Corrie's death was the result of an accident, and that the 2003 military police investigation -- which found she had been killed by falling earth as a result of her own irresponsible behaviour -- had been properly conducted.

"The deceased put herself into a dangerous situation, she stood in front of a giant bulldozer in a place where the operator could not see her. She did not distance herself as a reasonable person would have done," he said.

"Her death is the result an accident she bought upon herself."

According to eyewitness accounts, the 23-year-old was killed by a military bulldozer in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip on March 16, 2003.

At the time, she was acting as a human shield with a group of pro-Palestinian activists from the International Solidarity Movement to prevent troops from demolishing a house.

The verdict echoed the findings of an internal investigation by the Israeli military which was concluded just four weeks after her death and cleared troops of any responsibility in the matter, saying the bulldozer crew could not see Corrie because she was behind a mound of rubble.

The Corries' lawyer Hussein Abu said the family would appeal to the Supreme Court.

"The verdict is based upon distorted facts and could have been written by the state's attorney," he told reporters as her father Craig stood by stony-faced, her mother Cindy looking heartbroken and close to tears, an AFP correspondent said.

Cindy Corrie said the family was "deeply saddened and deeply troubled" over the verdict.

"We believe that Rachel's death could and should have been avoided," said the white-haired American, her voice breaking with emotion. "We knew from the beginning that a civil suit would be an uphill battle."

Israel, she said, operated "a well-heeled system to protect the military."

"This was a bad day, not only for the family, but a bad day for human rights, for humanity, for the rule of law and for the country of Israel," she said.

Craig Corrie, a veteran of the Vietnam War, said it was clear from testimony of senior military officers that they believed troops could kill people in southern Gaza "with impunity."

"We've seen from the highest levels of the military that they thought they could kill people on that border with impunity," he said.

In March 2010, the family launched the civil action for negligence against the state of Israel and the defence ministry for a symbolic sum of $1, plus costs.

They had earlier tried to sue Caterpillar, the bulldozer's US manufacturers, for liability but the action failed.

In its 2003 ruling, the military said Corrie had been killed by falling earth and building materials as a result of her own negligence.

"The death of Ms. Corrie was not caused as a result of a direct action by the bulldozer or by its running her over, but by the falling of earth and building materials that was pushed by the bulldozer," it said at the time.

The army went on to accuse Corrie and other activists from the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) of "illegal and irresponsible behaviour" contributing to her death.

But activists who were with her at the time said she was visible to the driver.

According to an account published two days after her death by activist Tom Dale, who witnessed the incident from 10 metres away, Corrie was clearly visible.

"The bulldozer drove toward Rachel slowly, gathering earth in its scoop as it went. She knelt there, she did not move. The bulldozer reached her and she began to stand up, climbing onto the mound of earth. She appeared to be looking into the cockpit.

"They pushed Rachel, first beneath the scoop, then beneath the blade, then continued till her body was beneath the cockpit. They waited over her for a few seconds, before reversing. They reversed with the blade pressed down, so it scraped over her body a second time. Every second I believed they would stop but they never did."

Corrie was killed at the height of the second intifada, or uprising (2000-2005) and quickly became an symbol of foreign support for the Palestinian cause and the subject of a 2005 play based on her emails and diary.
