PFT: Texans not interested in 'circus' for Favre

Tim Tebow, Travis LaBoyAP

At some point, those of us who have been skeptical that an NFL team can win consistently while running the Tim Tebow offense are going to have to acknowledge that the Broncos are, in fact, winning consistently while running the Tim Tebow offense.

The Broncos? 16-13 overtime victory today in San Diego means they?re now 5-1 since handing the starting quarterback job to Tebow, after starting the season 1-4 with Kyle Orton starting and Tebow on the bench.

Obviously, the Broncos? defense deserves an enormous amount of credit for what Denver has done. In the five wins with Tebow at quarterback, the Broncos? defense has allowed 15, 24, 10, 13 and 13 points.

But we also need to acknowledge that Tebow deserves some of the credit for the fact that the opposition isn?t scoring many points. Tebow had another turnover-free game today, and the ball-control offense that the Broncos run with Tebow at the helm makes life easier for their defense.

Bottom line, the Broncos? defense is playing the way it?s supposed to play, Tebow is playing the way he?s supposed to play, and Broncos coach John Fox and his staff have done a fantastic job of formulating game plans that work for the talent he has.

Today in San Diego, Tebow went 9-for-18 for 143 yards: Not exactly stellar passing numbers, but completing half his passes is progress for Tebow, and he had no interceptions to go with his one touchdown pass. More importantly, Tebow ran a whopping 22 times, and while he only picked up 67 yards on the ground, he was efficient and effective when he needed to be.

Can the Broncos really keep winning with a quarterback who goes 9-for-18 and calls it a good passing day? It?s starting to look that way. The Broncos are the Raiders? biggest threat in the AFC West, and Tebow might just take this team to the playoffs.

France seeks Arab backing for Syria intervention (Reuters)

CAIRO/PARIS (Reuters) ? France will seek Arab support on Thursday for a humanitarian corridor in Syria, the first time a major power has swung behind international intervention in the eight-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

Foreign Minister Alain Juppe, who first floated the proposal for a humanitarian intervention on Wednesday, gave more details of the plan and said he would propose it to a meeting of Arab League foreign ministers gathering in Cairo to discuss Syria.

After months in which the international community has seemed determined to avoid any direct entanglement in one of the core countries of the Middle East, the diplomatic consensus seems to be changing.

The Arab League suspended Syria's membership two weeks ago, accusing Assad of failing to fulfill a November 2 pledge to halt the violence and withdraw troops from cities.

This week, the prime minister of regional heavyweight Turkey - a NATO member with the military wherewithal to mount a cross-border operation - compared Assad to Hitler, Mussolini and Gaddafi, and called on him to quit.

Juppe said international monitors should be sent to protect civilians, with or without Assad's permission. He insisted the proposal fell short of a military intervention, but acknowledged that humanitarian convoys would need armed protection.

"There are two possible ways: That the international community, Arab League and the United Nations can get the regime to allow these humanitarian corridors," he told French radio on Thursday. "But if that isn't the case we'd have to look at other solutions ... with international observers,"

Asked if humanitarian convoys would need military protection, he said: "Of course... by international observers, but there is no question of military intervention in Syria."

He added that he had spoken to partners at the United Nations and U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, and would speak later on Thursday to the Arab League. On Wednesday Juppe also embraced the exiled opposition Syrian National Council as a legitimate group that France sought to work with.

One Arab government representative at the League said measures which the 22-member organization might consider on Thursday included imposing a travel ban on Syrian officials, freezing bank transfers or funds in Arab states related to Assad's government and stopping Arab projects in Syria.

"There are many ideas and suggestions for sanctions that can be imposed on the Syrian regime," said the official, who asked not to be identified.

The United States and the European Union have already imposed sanctions on senior Syrian officials, its oil sector and several state businesses. An EU official said on Wednesday the bloc was considering fresh financial sanctions.

Washington repeated an appeal on Wednesday for U.S. citizens to leave Syria: "The U.S. Embassy continues to urge U.S. citizens in Syria to depart immediately while commercial transportation is available," the embassy said on its website.

The U.S. navy said the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush arrived this week in the Mediterranean. It made no reference to the unrest in Syria and said the ship would continue through the Mediterranean en route home to the United States.

A Western diplomat in the region said about the U.S. aircraft carrier: "It is probably routine movement but it is going to put psychological pressure on the regime, and the Americans do not mind that."

DARKNESS OF THE MIDDLE AGES

Syria's bloodshed could pitch the Muslim world into "the darkness of the Middle Ages," Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on Wednesday.

A day earlier, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan criticized the "cowardice" of Assad, once a close ally, for turning guns on his own people.

Erdogan spoke of the fate of defeated dictators from Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini to Muammar Gaddafi, who was lynched by a mob last month at the end of an uprising that ultimately won the support of the West and Arab League states.

Khaled al-Habasi, an adviser to the Arab League's secretary-general, said the organization was working on two tracks after it rejected amendments requested by Syria for a monitoring team to oversee implementation of a November 2 peace deal.

"They are working on uniting the Syrian opposition on a united vision regarding the future of Syria during the transitional period, and calling on the (Arab League's) social and economic council to impose economic sanctions on the Syrian government," he said.

Speaking after a meeting with Syria's opposition National Council on Wednesday, Juppe described it as "the legitimate partner with which we want to work" -- the biggest international endorsement yet for the nascent opposition body.

A spokesman for European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the EU was ready to engage with the Syrian National Council and other opposition groups, but stressed the need for them to maintain a peaceful, non-sectarian approach.

The violence in Syria itself showed no signs of abating.

Authorities blame the bloodshed on armed groups, who they say have killed more than 1,100 members of the security forces since the unrest erupted in March. Syria has barred most independent media from Syria, making it difficult to verify accounts from activists and officials.

Activists and resident said Syrian forces killed two villagers on Wednesday in an agricultural area that has served as a supply line for defectors.

Two youths were also killed in the central city of Homs, 140-kms (90 miles) north of Damascus, which has become a center of resistance against Assad. Activists said evening demonstrations were held in several neighborhoods of Homs.

In the south, two villagers were killed near the city of Deraa on the border with Jordan, where more tanks and armored vehicles deployed in the last month after a slew of defections and attacks on loyalist forces, activists said.

Also on Wednesday, state news agency SANA reported the funerals of nine soldiers and policemen killed by "armed terrorist groups."

Thousands of soldiers have deserted the regular army since it started cracking down on the eight-month protest movement, inspired by Arab uprisings which toppled the leaders of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

Assad, 46, seems prepared to fight it out, playing on fears of a sectarian war if Syria's complex ethno-sectarian mosaic shatters and relying on support of senior officials and the military.

However many experts say Assad, who can depend mainly on the loyalty of two elite Alawite units, cannot maintain current military operations without cracks emerging in the armed forces.

Barbara Corcoran, Real Estate Expert, Turns Obstacles Into Opportunities (VIDEO)

Barbara Corcoran, best-selling author, real estate expert, and "Shark Tank" personality knows a lot about obstacles or as she refers to them, opportunities.

In the video above she describes how she was able to turn some of her most devastating setbacks into business opportunities.

"I've learned if you jump off the cliff, guess what? You find the confidence while you're falling through the air, you find the solution. But it's jumping off the cliff with blind faith and stupidity frankly, that makes you find the solution on the way down."

She was able to land on her feet and sold her business, The Corcoran Group, for $66 million, having started out decades prior with a thousand dollar loan.

Diagnosing Pancreatic Cancer / Pain.com

Diagnosing Pancreatic Cancer

There are several medical imaging procedures and diagnostic tests that can help diagnose pancreatic cancer. These procedures include ultrasound scans, MRIs and CT scans of the abdomen, as well as pancreatic biopsies and other tests called PTC and ERCP.

Blood work is usually taken during the diagnostic process. A person who has pancreatic cancer may have abnormal results on some tests, such as the complete blood count, liver function tests and bilirubin levels in the serum. Bilirubin is a pigment that comes from the breakdown of red blood cells. Normally, this pigment is removed from the body, but liver or pancreatic disease can cause this pigment to build up in the skin, leading to a yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes. This yellow discoloration is called jaundice, and it is a common symptom of liver or pancreatic problems. Bilirubin also builds up in the blood, causing elevated levels when blood is drawn and analyzed in the lab. A protein called CA19-9 is commonly elevated in cases of pancreatic cancer, so this is another blood test that can indirectly indicate pancreatic cancer.

A basic ultrasound scan can find a tumor on the pancreas that may or may not be cancerous. Ultrasound uses sound waves of a higher frequency than the sounds we hear to create images of the inside of the abdomen. The most basic form of ultrasound is conducted from the outside of the abdomen. However, it is also possible to do an endoscopic ultrasound. In an endoscopic ultrasound, a device called an endoscope is threaded through the esophagus to the stomach of a patient who has been sedated for the procedure. An ultrasound scan is then conducted from the inside of the abdomen, rather than the outside. An endoscopic ultrasound is not usually the first diagnostic test that is conducted for pancreatic cancer, but it can provide valuable information about a tumor, such as whether or not the tumor is likely to be operable. It can also find smaller tumors that may not show up on other types of medical imaging scans, such as CT scans.

An abdominal MRI scan may be used to make images of the pancreas and find tumors. A CT scan is another option for a first diagnostic test for potential cases of pancreatic cancer. Both techniques can find tumors and give some information as to whether a tumor is likely to be surgically removable. However, these scans alone may be inconclusive as to whether the tumor is malignant or benign.

ERCP stands for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. In this procedure, a type of dye is used to show the pancreatic bile ducts. The dye used in this procedure is injected through a catheter that is threaded through an endoscope that is placed through the esophagus into the stomach. The endoscope also serves to pump a small amount of air into the upper digestive tract to improve visibility for the procedure. This procedure is performed on a patient who has received anesthetic medication. This diagnostic procedure may be helpful in some cases, but it is not the first choice for a procedure used for diagnosing pancreatic cancer. The procedure is helpful to place stents in the pancreatic bile ducts as a treatment for jaundiced patients, however.

PTC stands for percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography. This procedure is very similar in theory to ERCP, in that a dye is used to help visualize bile ducts. However, in PTC the liver bile ducts are examined instead of the pancreatic bile ducts. The dye is injected via a needle that goes into the liver from the outside instead of a catheter and an endoscope that goes into the pancreas from the inside of the body. This procedure can help rule out problems with the bile ducts.

A biopsy is an important diagnostic procedure for pancreatic cancer. A pancreatic biopsy may be performed during an endoscopic procedure, such as an endoscopic ultrasound or ERCP, or by itself. If the biopsy is not performed during an endoscopic procedure, pancreatic tissue for examination may be obtained through a needle that is inserted through the skin from the outside of the body. Only a small amount of pancreatic tissue is necessary for the microscopic examination, but a biopsy can confirm a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, or rule out malignancy.

As pancreatic cancer is not usually symptomatic during the early stages of the disease, the cancer is often discovered after it has already had time to grow and spread. For this reason, staging the pancreatic cancer is also important once a diagnosis has been made. Stage I pancreatic cancer is confined to the pancreas itself. Stage II pancreatic cancer has spread to nearby tissues. Stage III pancreatic cancer has spread beyond nearby blood vessels, and Stage IV pancreatic cancer has spread to other parts of the body. The sooner that pancreatic cancer is diagnosed, the better the prognosis for the patient.

Turkish trial of journalists raises human rights concerns

Turkish journalists Ahmet Sik and?Nedim Sener appeared in court today in a trial that has some questioning the health of Turkey's democracy, long considered a model in the Muslim world.

Several Turkish journalists appeared in court today for the start of a trial that has sparked fears of growing authoritarianism in the Muslim-majority democracy.

Two investigative reporters who had been writing about judicial and police corruption are among those implicated in the alleged conspiracy to overthrow the country?s Islamic-rooted government.

Turkey?s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has frequently been praised by the United States and European Union for enacting judicial reforms and wresting power from the country?s once-dominant military.?However in the past four years, hundreds of people have been arrested in connection with a series of sprawling terror investigations that critics claim are a tool for stifling dissent.

?Anyone opposing the government is going to prison, and all the others are now censoring themselves,? says Yonca Sik, the wife of Ahmet Sik, one of the journalists charged.??If people are satisfied with this democracy then I wish them luck and happiness, but it is not my definition of democracy.?

The case, in which 13 people face trial, was adjourned until Dec. 26 after the defense requested the replacement of the presiding judge, since he is a plaintiff in another case against one of the defendants.

Accused of spreading propaganda for the "Ergenekon" gang ? an alleged hard-line secularist terror group ? their case forms part of a far larger investigation in which some 400 people are on trial.

Around 600 more people, including city mayors, lawyers, political activists, and more journalists, are charged in relation to another probe targeting the civilian wing of the Kurdish separatist rebel group, the Kurdistan Workers Party.

Last month, a prominent publisher and free speech activist, Ragip Zarakolu, and an Istanbul-based political science professor were among those arrested.

According to Emma Sinclair-Webb, Turkey researcher for Human Rights Watch, the cases expose serious shortcomings in the Turkish judicial system.

LogMeIn Ignition (for Android)

LogMeIn Ignition for Android is a remote control app for accessing PCs and Macs from Android devices (support for tablets was recently introduced).? The software works very well?aside from a minor glitch when the app momentarily froze on me?providing not only remote control over machines, but audio streaming, light video streaming and a secured connection, all from your Android handset.

All of that remote goodness will cost you though, big time, at least when it comes to a mobile app?$30. That price might seem like a frivolous waste of money for those who only need to connect to home or the occasional work machine, since there are free and low costs apps available for about a buck, such as Jump Desktop, which can provide basic remote connectivity. However, for those who need reliable remote access, advanced features or may need to administer a server time-to-time from an Android device?it's a worthy investment.

Install
The app is available from LogMeIn's website. You can get it by scanning a QR code on the site or by simply downloading it from the Android Market.

During the install process, the app prompts for several needed permissions to the device such as modifying/deleting the SD card, access to the Internet, viewing the network state and read access to the system log files. The fact the permissions part of the install is automated is a time-saver. I have installed apps on my Android device only to have them not run, displaying a host of error messages, typically because of permissions issues.

Setup
Setting up LogMeIn begins with creating a free account on LogMeIn's website. Next, you have to download and install the LogMeIn client software on any computer you wish to remotely access from an Android device.? The client software to download is LogMeIn Free or Pro. Both are simple point-and-click installations. I easily installed LogMeIn Free on both a Windows 7 laptop and a Windows Server 2008 R2 box.

When you install LogMeIn host software on a PC or Mac you are adding that computer to your LogMeIn account. Entering the same LogMeIn account username and password on both the host machine and the Android device, creates a secure connection between the hosts and the Android device.

Businesses needing to remotely install hosts to a multitude of PC or Mac clients would have to upgrade to LogMeIn Central which supports mass deployment.

Usage
After installing the client on the hosts and logging in with the account information on the host machines and on the app, I fired up LogMeIn on my Droid 2. I immediately saw the computer names of the machines with the host software installed. They were listed under a? pre-configured "Default " group listing.

To remotely connect to a host, users must enter in that machine's login credentials. Thankfully, you can check a box to store those credentials, although that may not be a bright idea for high-security machines.

The polish of LogMeIn Ingnition is apparent when compared to a cheaper remote access app like Jump Desktop. With Jump Desktop, I found the documentation on how to navigate the touch screen when remotely connected to a host did not jibe with how the actual navigation worked with some gestures.

LogMeIn, in contrast, displays several hints just before connecting to a host: "pinch to zoom in and out," "one finger to pan," "double-click and slide to drag," and so on. The instructions were spot on for working within my host connection. Re-sizing screens, zooming, double-clicks and right-clicks all responded well in my remote sessions, although at one point, while connected to my Windows 7 host, the LogMeIn app froze and stopped responding to my touch gestures.

Another great feature of LogMeIn lacking in other remote apps targeted more to consumers is the ability to throw a Ctrl-Alt-Del command to a host. This is really handy, especially when remotely connecting to servers; you may want to switch user accounts without having to reboot the entire server.? You can also perform a remote Alt-Tab for quick switching between apps.

Text copy and paste between host and device is supported, although selecting an area of text to copy in a remote session requires an abnormal level of touch precision and heaps of patience. I find it far easier to use the right-click context menu to perform a "Select All" from the host's app and then paste into my device's app and deleting any unwanted text after pasting.? Copying and pasting images and files between host and device are currently not supported.

LogMeIn Ignition's Audio streaming works very well. I was able to stream music files stored on my laptop to my Droid 2. It's possible to stream video as well, although unless both the device and host are connected to high-speed broadband, probably not worth the effort due to latency issues.

The various settings options such as controlling network speed, screen resolution, sound quality and keyboard locking gives users a way to customize remote sessions according to needs and like. One really important setting is configuring the app to always prompt before exiting a session, saving a user from accidently logging off and having to re-login all over again.

Another LogMeIn Hit
LogMeIn Ignition for Android delivers a secured and robust remote access experience from an Android device. The version for Android still needs to play catch-up with the version for iPad, which supports offline local file access. However, with the wide array of Android devices it's not surprising that such a feature might be easier to develop for a uniform platform like the iPad and might take some time to get to work on all of the Android offerings.

Still, LogMeIn Ignition is one of the best remote access solutions for Android and clearly the choice for professional use. If you only need simple access to home machines, the $30 price may not make it worth a download from Android Market. However, those requiring safe, reliable access from Android devices, in particular, access to business machines, would be well served by this app.

Newt Gingrich ?prepared to take the heat? on immigration (The Ticket)

Gingrich (Evan Vucci/AP)

Newt Gingrich, the latest frontrunner in the 2012 GOP presidential field has wasted little time in testing his appeal for the party's social conservative base, with comments in Tuesday night's CNN debate in favor of a more "humane" approach to enforcing immigration law. In the forum--a national-security debate that the cable network cosponsored with conservative think tanks Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute--Gingrich argued to extend the basic protections of citizenship to the families of otherwise law-abiding illegal immigrants.

"I don't see how the party that says it's the party of the family, is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here a quarter century," the former House Speaker said. "And I'm prepared to take the heat for saying 'let's be humane and enforce the law without giving them citizenship but by finding a way to create legality so they are not separate from their families.'" You can watch Gingrich's comments in the CNN clip below:

Gingrich?who advocates the Vernon K. Krieble Foundation's immigration proposal to create "red card" work permits-- said he does support deporting recent illegal immigrants. But he did disown a hardline policy of seeking out and punishing children of illegal immigrants, including those who wish to serve in the U.S. military. As rival candidate Michele Bachmann was quick to point out, Gingrich's position shares many affinities with the DREAM Act proposal defeated in Congress last year. And Bachmann, together with other conservative candidates on the dais, called out Gingrich for backing a version of amnesty for the families of people who entered the United States illegally.

"I don't agree that you would make 11 million [illegal] workers [in this country] legal," Bachmann said. "Because that in effect is amnesty. And I also don't agree that you would give the DREAM Act on a federal level."

In a follow-up exchange on the issue, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said he agreed with Gingrich that foreign students with masters degrees should be encouraged to remain in this country via green cards. But Romney also stressed that he agreed with moderater Wolf Blitzer's suggestion that Gingrich's policies would entice more illegal immigrants to come to America.

"There's no question," Romney said. "That will only encourage more people to do the same thing. People respond to incentives, and if you can become a permanent resident of the United States by coming here illegally, you'll do so."

Five minutes after the debate ended, Bachmann's campaign issued a press release entitled "Newt Gingrich's Open Door to Illegal Immigrant Amnesty." The Bachmann camp listed Gingrich's past statements in support of the enforcement policy he outlined tonight.

Gingrich, a staunch conservative, has long backed creating paths for otherwise law-abiding illegal immigrants to work in America--but Tuesday's comments are likely to make significant waves now that he's atop the presidential polls.

The fledgling 2012 campaign has already seen one early frontrunner stumble on the thorny immigration question. In September, Texas Gov. Rick Perry--who had enjoyed a strong initial run in the polls after he announced his presidential candidacy--tried to make a similar case for a less hardline immigration policy during a debate in Orlando, Fla.

In that forum, Perry stated that opponents of a Texas policy permitting in-state tuition for the children of illegal immigrants "don't have a heart."

After conservatives assailed Perry for that comment, he backpedaled, saying that his choice of words hadn't been sound.

Former Washington Post reporter Jose Antonio Vargas, who revealed in a June story for the New York Times that he was an undocumented illegal immigrant, offered praise for Gingrich immediately following the forum.

"Both sides need to elevate the conversation about immigration, and that is why I applaud Newt Gingrich for his compassionate, common sense and solution-based approach to our country's immigration problem," Vargas wrote in an email to Yahoo News. "The system is broken; that much, we can all agree on. But let's start talking realistically and pragmatically about dealing with immigrants like me--who were schooled in America and have paid income taxes here in America--who are Americans in all but paper. I ask Gingrich to also visit Define American and perhaps submit a video. How does he define American? "

Gingrich reiterated his position after the debate, telling CNN in an on-camera interview that he can't imagine any "serious person" telling someone they've long known that they must abandon their family, their church as "we're kicking you out forcibly."

And he rejected the suggestion his position opens the door to amnesty. "It's totally inaccurate," Gingrich replied, saying the next president must work to unify the country with similar measure. "Romney had it right when he said we favor immigration," Gingrich said of the United States.

Correction 7:49 a.m. ET: A previous version of this story stated that Mitt Romney offered support for illegal immigrants with masters degrees to remain in the United States. Romney offered support for foreign students with masters degrees.

Asia stocks down after US revises growth data (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stocks fell Wednesday after the U.S. government revised its economic growth estimate downward and climbing yields on Spanish bonds magnified worries over Europe's debt load.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 1.7 percent to 17,941.62. South Korea's Kospi lost 1.7 percent to 1,795.81 and Australia's S&P ASX 200 index lost 1.2 percent to 4,082.40.

Japanese stock markets were closed for a public holiday.

Stocks on Wall Street slipped Tuesday after a government report showed the U.S. economy grew at a 2 percent annual rate from July through September, down from an initial estimate of 2.5 percent. Economists had expected the figure to remain the same.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 0.5 percent to close at 11,493.72. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 0.4 percent to 1,188.04. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.1 percent to 2,521.28.

Higher borrowing costs for Spain, meanwhile, renewed worries about Europe's debt crisis. The higher rates suggest that investors are still skeptical that the country will get its budget under control despite a new government coming to power this week.

Investors have been worried that Spain could become the next country to need financial support from its European neighbors if its borrowing rates climb to unsustainable levels.

Greece was forced to seek relief from its lenders after its long-term borrowing rates rose above 7 percent on the bond market. The rate on Spain's own benchmark 10-year bond is dangerously close to that level, 6.58 percent.

But fears of the debt crisis spreading elsewhere in Europe were allayed somewhat after the International Monetary Fund announced a plan to provide quick cash on flexible terms to countries facing sudden financial stress.

Concerns remain that Europe's debt crisis is pushing the region toward recession, which would slow industrial activity in Europe and in countries around the world that export to Europe.

Benchmark oil for January delivery fell 65 cents to $97.36 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.09 to finish at $98.01 per barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday.

In currency trading, the euro fell to $1.3466 from $1.3509 late Tuesday in New York. The dollar rose slightly to 76.99 yen from 76.97 yen.

Palestinians hope for US reserve over UNESCO funds (AP)

LONDON ? The Palestinian foreign minister said Wednesday he hopes the United States can be persuaded to reverse its decision to cut funds to UNESCO now that the U.N. agency has voted to give the Palestinians membership.

Riad Malki told The Associated Press in an interview that several countries are lobbying the U.S. over the withdrawal of the funds and that talks are planned between U.S. officials and UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.

Following the Oct. 31 vote that made Palestine a member of the Paris-based U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, two U.S. laws kicked in that halted the flow of funds to the agency, forcing it to scale back literacy and development programs it carries out in countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and the new nation of South Sudan.

The United States contributes $80 million annually in dues ? 22 percent of UNESCO's overall budget ? and its 2011 contribution was not yet in when the laws took effect, immediately throwing UNESCO into crisis.

U.S. officials previously have said UNESCO's decision risked undermining the international community's work toward a comprehensive Middle East peace plan, and could be a distraction from the aim of restarting direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

"I hope that the United States will review that decision again, and re-engage with their commitment to support UNESCO," Malki told the AP, after formally signing a so-called instrument of accession to UNESCO in London, where the organization was created after World War II.

"We should not really mix politics with this kind of work. I hope that the United States and Congress should review the matter," he said.

The U.N. agency has been working to fill its money gap, appealing to other member states and creating a "click and donate" website for individuals to give money.

However, Malki said the main focus of member nations is to press the U.S. into a change of stance.

"We should really try to convince the U.S. to change its mind ... in terms of financial contribution. This is really very important," he said. "There are so many countries who are trying to do so."

Malki confirmed that the Palestinians do not intend to immediately apply for membership of other U.N. agencies ? some of which they now have an automatic right to join following their admission to UNESCO.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon had raised concern over the Palestinian Authority's efforts to join U.N. affiliates before winning full membership of the U.N. itself.

The Palestinians have asked the U.N. Security Council to grant them full membership in the United Nations, but have acknowledged they are unlikely to muster the nine votes needed to approve their bid.

"We are not interested in moving that quickly to other organizations," Malki told the AP. "Right now we are not going to endanger or put in jeopardy the work of other organizations, we will wait until we conclude our mission in the Security Council, and when we do so we will look back and see what will be our next move."

Membership of UNESCO means the Palestinians could automatically gain membership in the U.N. Industrial Development Organization, which aims to lower poverty and help the environment, and the World Intellectual Property Organization, he said.

With the vote to admit Palestine, "some consider UNESCO as a hero, some as a villain," UNESCO Deputy Director-General Getachew Engida said. "We're all caught in this cross-fire, unfortunately, and it is too bad. I'm an African and I feel the pain," said Engida, who is an Ethiopian.

UNESCO may be best known in the public mind for its program to protect the cultures of the world via its Heritage sites. But its core mission also includes life-sustaining activities like helping to eradicate poverty or ensure clean water as well as teaching girls to read and promoting freedom of expression and human rights. All these are essential elements of nation-building, and engendering a climate of peace and are in the public eye as the Arab Spring unfolds in painful fits of violence and hope in North Africa and the Middle East.

A grim reality is already setting in for many nations ? including those which voted for Palestinian membership ? particularly in projects where the United States was directly implicated.

A case in point is Iraq, where several projects are compromised and one may not see the light of day ? just as the United States completes its troop pullout by year's end.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had promised $900,000 for the first phase of a project to strengthen Iraq's National Water Council, joining $500,000 in Iraqi funds to set up a database to track water supplies. Without the U.S. funds, the project is at risk, officials say.

Another $1 million in U.S. funds have been suspended for a project to promote public confidence in Iraq's judiciary system.

In South Sudan, which became an independent nation in July after decades of civil war with Sudan, a plan to help create the country's first Ministry of Education is among those that may suffer without the U.S. funds.

"In my personal view, I don't think that withholding funds is in the interest of the United States," Engida said. "UNESCO works in close cooperation with the U.S. administration ... to advance on common shared values, on democracy, good governance, freedom of the press, education for all."

Even without its largesse, the United States remains a welcome member. It was voted to UNESCO's executive board 48 hours after pulling out its money.

While the click-to-donate program aimed at the public has reportedly brought in paltry sums, some nations are digging into their pockets, notably Indonesia with a pledge Tuesday of $10 million and Gabon with an early pledge of $2 million, according to UNESCO spokeswoman Sue Williams.

Archaeologists typically record and analyse the traces of past human activities. The caves of Lascaux in southern France are celebrated as a place where early humans made their marks on cave walls. The cave is now protected, and an exact replica is what the public now encounter.

But a new study by archaeologists has been examining marks made much more recently -- graffiti by the Sex Pistols now discovered on the walls of the flat the punk group rented in London in the mid-1970s. The authors of a paper in the latest issue of the journal Antiquity argue that both are pieces of art and both lend themselves to archaeological investigation.

Dr John Schofield, of the Department of Archaeology at the University of York, and independent researcher Dr Paul Graves-Brown, suggest that the intact Sex Pistols graffiti may be of greater significance than the discovery of early Beatles recordings. They say the graffiti found behind cupboards in the property in Denmark Street in London is "a direct and powerful representation of a radical and dramatic movement of rebellion."

The researchers carried out a detailed analysis of the graffiti's content and its cultural significance. Though they concede it could be considered rude, offensive and uncomfortable, they contend that its presence confirms the Denmark Street flat as an important historical and archaeological site in a street known as London's 'Tin Pan Alley.'

Their findings appear in the latest issue of Antiquity less than a fortnight before the 35th anniversary of the day the Sex Pistols earned national notoriety by swearing on prime-time television.

The graffiti is in the upper room of a two-storey 19th century property in the West End now used as offices. John Schofield and Paul Graves-Brown photographed and made a complete digitised tracing of the material. The bulk of the graffiti is by John Lydon (aka Rotten) and consists of eight cartoons depicting himself and other members of the band, as well as their manager, Malcolm McLaren, and other Pistols' associates.

Dr Schofield says: "The tabloid press once claimed that early Beatles recordings discovered at the BBC were the most important archaeological find since Tutankhamun's tomb. The Sex Pistols' graffiti in Denmark Street surely ranks alongside this and to our minds usurps it."

The researchers refer to the site as 'anti-heritage:' because it contradicts what agencies and heritage practitioners typically value or wish to keep, and even what is generally regarded as landscape and place. And they agonise over whether or not the Denmark Street property should become a conventional heritage site with a blue plaque to mark its historical significance.

But as the authors say: "We feel justified in sticking our tongues out at the heritage establishment and suggesting that punk's iconoclasm provides the context for conservation decision-making. Our call is for something that directly follows punk's attitude to the mainstream, to authority; contradicting norms and challenging convention.

"This is an important site, historically and archaeologically, for the material and evidence it contains. But should we retain it for the benefit of this and future generations? In our view, with anti-heritage, different rules apply. The building is undoubtedly important, and could meet criteria for listing or for a blue plaque, if not now then in time."

But they "recoil from the suggestion". Instead, they argue, there appears to have been an informal consensus as to the importance of the site, and, in the spirit of punk, "perhaps this DIY approach to heritage management is all that the site needs."

So could Denmark Street be Punk's Lascaux?

Tucson shooter appeals forced medication ruling (Reuters)

TUCSON, Ariz (Reuters) ? Tucson shooting rampage suspect Jared Loughner is appealing an order to allow doctors to forcibly medicate him against his will, papers lodged with an appellate court showed on Monday.

Loughner is accused of shooting dead six people outside a Tucson supermarket in January and wounding 13 others including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona Democrat who had been holding a meeting there with constituents at the time.

Giffords was shot through the head and is recovering.

Loughner has been receiving antipsychotic medication since July at a facility for federal prisoners in Missouri, in a bid to restore him to mental competency.

Loughner's lawyers lodged the motion with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. It argued that a previous district court order issued in August denied their client a "prompt post-deprivation hearing" on emergency forced medication.

The 23-year-old college dropout was diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia, disordered thinking and delusions, and was in May declared incompetent to stand trial.

Loughner has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges, including first degree murder.

American spies outed, CIA suffers in Lebanon

(AP) ? The CIA's operations in Lebanon have been badly damaged after Hezbollah identified and captured a number of U.S. spies recently, current and former U.S. officials told The Associated Press. The intelligence debacle is particularly troubling because the CIA saw it coming.

Hezbollah's longtime leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, boasted on television in June that he had rooted out at least two CIA spies who had infiltrated the ranks of Hezbollah, which the U.S. considers a terrorist group closely allied with Iran. Though the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon officially denied the accusation, current and former officials concede that it happened and the damage has spread even further.

In recent months, CIA officials have secretly been scrambling to protect their remaining spies ? foreign assets or agents working for the agency ? before Hezbollah can find them.

To be sure, some deaths are to be expected in shadowy spy wars. It's an extremely risky business and people get killed. But the damage to the agency's spy network in Lebanon has been greater than usual, several former and current U.S. officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about security matters.

The Lebanon crisis is the latest mishap involving CIA counterintelligence, the undermining or manipulating of the enemy's ability to gather information. Former CIA officials have said that once-essential skill has been eroded as the agency shifted from outmaneuvering rival spy agencies to fighting terrorists. In the rush for immediate results, former officers say, tradecraft has suffered.

The most recent high-profile example was the suicide bomber who posed as an informant and killed seven CIA employees and wounded six others in Khost, Afghanistan in December 2009.

Last year, then-CIA director Leon Panetta said the agency had to maintain "a greater awareness of counterintelligence." But eight months later, Nasrallah let the world know he had bested the CIA, demonstrating that the agency still struggles with this critical aspect of spying and sending a message to those who would betray Hezbollah.

The CIA was well aware the spies were vulnerable in Lebanon. CIA officials were warned, including the chief of the unit that supervises Hezbollah operations from CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., and the head of counterintelligence. It remains unclear whether anyone has been or will be held accountable in the wake of this counterintelligence disaster or whether the incident will affect the CIA's ability to recruit assets in Lebanon.

In response to AP's questions about what happened in Lebanon, a U.S. official said Hezbollah is recognized as a complicated enemy responsible for killing more Americans than any other terrorist group before September 2001. The agency does not underestimate the organization, the official said.

The CIA's toughest adversaries, like Hezbollah and Iran, have for years been improving their ability to hunt spies, relying on patience and guile to exploit counterintelligence holes.

In 2007, for instance, when Ali-Reza Asgari, a brigadier general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps of Iran, disappeared in Turkey, it was assumed that he was either killed or defected. In response, the Iranian government began a painstaking review of foreign travel by its citizens, particularly to places like Turkey where Iranians don't need a visa and could meet with foreign intelligence services.

It didn't take long, a Western intelligence official told the AP, before the U.S., Britain and Israel began losing contact with some of their Iranian spies.

The State Department last year described Hezbollah as "the most technically capable terrorist group in the world," and the Defense Department estimates it receives between $100 million and $200 million per year in funding from Iran.

Backed by Iran, Hezbollah has built a professional counterintelligence apparatus that Nasrallah ? whom the U.S. government designated an international terrorist a decade ago ? proudly describes as the "spy combat unit." U.S. intelligence officials believe the unit, which is considered formidable and ruthless, went operational in about 2004.

Using the latest commercial software, Nasrallah's spy-hunters unit began methodically searching for spies in Hezbollah's midst. To find them, U.S. officials said, Hezbollah examined cellphone data looking for anomalies. The analysis identified cellphones that, for instance, were used rarely or always from specific locations and only for a short period of time. Then it came down to old-fashioned, shoe-leather detective work: Who in that area had information that might be worth selling to the enemy?

The effort took years but eventually Hezbollah, and later the Lebanese government, began making arrests. By one estimate, 100 Israeli assets were apprehended as the news made headlines across the region in 2009. Some of those suspected Israeli spies worked for telecommunications companies and served in the military.

Back at CIA headquarters, the arrests alarmed senior officials. The agency prepared a study on its own vulnerabilities, U.S. officials said, and the results proved to be prescient.

The analysis concluded that the CIA was susceptible to the same analysis that had compromised the Israelis, the officials said.

CIA managers were instructed to be extra careful about handling sources in Lebanon. A U.S. official said recommendations were issued to counter the potential problem.

But it's unclear what preventive measures were taken by the Hezbollah unit chief or the officer in charge of the Beirut station. Former officials say the Hezbollah unit chief is no stranger to the necessity of counterintelligence and knew the risks. The unit chief has worked overseas in hostile environments like Afghanistan and played an important role in the capture of a top terrorist while stationed in the Persian Gulf region after the attacks of 9/11.

"We've lost a lot of people in Beirut over the years, so everyone should know the drill," said a former Middle East case officer familiar with the situation.

But whatever actions the CIA took, they were not enough. Like the Israelis, bad tradecraft doomed these CIA assets and the agency ultimately failed to protect them, an official said. In some instances, CIA officers fell into predictable patterns when meeting their sources, the official said.

This allowed Hezbollah to identify assets and case officers and unravel at least part of the CIA's spy network in Lebanon. There was also a reluctance to share cases and some files were put in "restricted handling." The designation severely limits the number of people who know the identity of the source but also reduces the number of experts who could spot problems that might lead to their discovery, officials said.

Nasrallah's televised announcement in June was followed by finger-pointing among departments inside the CIA as the spy agency tried figure out what went wrong and contain the damage.

The fate of these CIA assets is unknown. Hezbollah treats spies differently, said Matthew Levitt, a counterterrorism and intelligence expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Studies who's writing a book about the terrorist organization

"It all depends on who these guys were and what they have to say," Levitt said. "Hezbollah has disappeared people before. Others they have kept around."

Who's responsible for the mess in Lebanon? It's not clear. The chief of Hezbollah operations at CIA headquarters continues to run the unit that also focuses on Iranians and Palestinians. The CIA's top counterintelligence officer, who was one of the most senior women in the clandestine service, recently retired after approximately five years in the job. She is credited with some important cases, including the recent arrests of Russian spies who had been living in the U.S. for years.

Officials said the woman was succeeded by a more experienced operations officer. That officer has held important posts in Moscow, Southeast Asia, Europe and the Balkans, important frontlines of the agency's spy wars with foreign intelligence services and terrorist organizations.

Stocks sink; Spain becomes latest worry in Europe (AP)

NEW YORK ? A spike in borrowing costs for the Spanish government renewed worries about Europe's debt crisis and pushed stocks lower for the second day in a row.

A stalemate in Congress over cutting the budget deficit also pulled the market down Thursday. Technology stocks sank after NetApp and Applied Materials predicted weaker earnings.

In Spain, an auction of 10-year bonds left the country paying interest rates of nearly 7 percent, the highest rate since 1997. Economists see that level as unsustainable because it would make the interest payments on Spain's debt so high that the government would barely be able to afford them. Greece and Ireland were forced to seek rescue loans from the European Union after their bond yields jumped above the same level.

Concerns about Europe's debt crisis overshadowed better economic reports in the U.S. The number of people seeking unemployment benefits last week fell to the lowest level in 7 months, a sign layoffs are easing.

"The economic data in the U.S. has been improving," said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial in Westport, Conn. "If it weren't for Europe, I think equity markets would be doing much better right now."

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 134.86 points, or 1.1 percent, to close at 11,770.73. The index wavered most of the morning, then turned sharply lower shortly after noon. It fell as many as 229 points at 2:30 p.m.

Spain has more than twice the amount of debt as Greece and Ireland combined, which would make it difficult for other countries to rescue. Like Italy, whose main borrowing rate also spiked above 7 percent in the last week, the country is trying to pay down its debts as its economy slows.

The Spanish bond auction came a day after Fitch Ratings warned that major U.S. banks could be "greatly affected" if Europe's debt crisis continues to spread beyond the financially troubled Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Italy and Spain.

Another looming concern for investors is that a Congressional supercomittee will fail to agree on $1.2 trillion in budget cuts before a Nov. 23 deadline. If they don't, huge cuts to government spending are scheduled to kick in across the board.

"I get the impression we're watching a slow-motion train wreck," said Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 20.75, or 1.7 percent, to 1,216.16. The index fell below its average over the past 100 days. That's a bearish signal because many traders wait until indexes fall below such technical levels before deciding to unload their positions.

Technology stocks fell more than the rest of the market. The Nasdaq slid 51.62, or 2 percent, to 2,587.99. All three major indexes are now down more than 3 percent for the week.

NetApp Inc. plunged 12.3 percent, the most in the S&P 500 index, after the data storage company forecast earnings below Wall Street's estimates. Applied Materials Inc. also said its earnings for the current quarter would be weaker than analysts' forecasts. The stock fell 7.5 percent.

In corporate news:

? Consumer review site Angie's List soared 25 percent on the company's first day of trading. Angie's List Inc., which runs reviews of veterinarians, plumbers and other local services, priced its initial public offering of 8.8 million shares at $13 late Wednesday.

? The mutual fund company Legg Mason Inc. said the well-known money manager Bill Miller will step down from its flagship mutual fund next year. Legg Mason's stock dropped 2.8 percent.

? Sears Holdings Corp. fell 4.6 percent after its third-quarter results missed Wall Street's expectations. The retailer's sales were dragged down by declining consumer electronics sales and softer sales at its Kmart stores.

? J.M. Smucker Co. lost 1.8 percent after reporting that rising costs for ingredients were cutting into profits.

Rocco Staino: Holiday Windows Go SoHo

2011-11-15-ToylandFamily2.jpg
Decorated store windows rank right up there with the tree in Rockefeller Center as must-dos during this holiday season. So after viewing Barneys, Saks and Lord & Taylor in midtown be sure to head downtown to SoHo to catch the window at the Scholastic Store where beginning on November 13th "The Toyland Express" will make a seven-week stop at 557 Broadway (Between Prince & Spring Streets).

Inspired by Walter Wick's newest book, Can You See What I See? Toyland Express, the store window takes families back to their favorite childhood holiday memory, as they look inside a 3-D toy shop from the 1950s with original toys and props from Walter Wick's studio, including miniature figurines, vintage teddy bears, dolls, and the beloved Toyland Express toy train.

The search-and-find picture book begins in a toy maker's workshop where the train is first created, then follows its toy-filled journey through many playful changes, into the attic and out again, to be rediscovered and reinvented by another child many years later. 2011-11-12-Seymour.jpgThe store is hosting a Toyland Express Weekend on Saturday & Sunday, November 19th & 20th. Visitors will be taken on a magical adventure where pages come to life as your solve train themed riddles to unlock special discounts. Autographed copies of the book will be available and children will also have the opportunity to build their own Seymour, the reoccurring character in the Can You See What I See series.

The Scholastic Store's window has been home to some of the most visited children's book displays including, Harry Potter, Star Wars, last year's It's Christmas, David and more recently, Wonderstruck, celebrating the release of the New York Times #1 bestselling book by Brian Selznick.

Hmm... Interesting concept. So I note that there is no section on your skeleton for a picture or a physical description. Does this mean that they are optional. And as pictures are optional... would you rather us use a real life picture, or one that was drawn.

May I reserve Hollow-Point? He seems to be a diverse character.

God does
Did you know that?

God doesn't care where you come from
He'll love you all the same
You ask him for forgiveness and redemption
