AT&T app enables VoIP international calls

AT&T Call International

By Rosa Golijan

AT&T is offering a new app ??one that allows all iPhone (and some Android and BlackBerry) users to make reasonably priced international calls via VoIP.

The app is called AT&T Call International and can be downloaded for free through the Apple App Store?and?the corresponding AT&T website.?The app appears to require you to sign up for a Call International account ??which you will connect to a credit card.?There are no monthly reoccurring charges, no service agreements and no prepaid balances involved.

Once you've downloaded the app and set up an AT&T Call International account, you'll be able to make calls by simply opening the app and dialing an international number or selecting a name from the contacts list in the app.?And tada! Your call will be routed through the AT&T Call International gateway (the routing number will appear on your screen instead of the number you dialed).

These calls will of course use up some of your service plan's minutes, just like any others.

Is this app and its corresponding service worth it though? Well, that depends on which countries you're interested in calling. Based on a quick comparison between my current phone bills and the rates advertised for AT&T Call International, some rates are better, some are the same, and some are worse than what's offered by other providers.
