215 evacuated as NY hospital power fails

At least 215 patients had to be evacuated from NYU Medical Center when the backup generator failed. NBC's Rehema Ellis reports.

By JoNel Aleccia, NBC News

Power went out at a major New York hospital Monday night, just at the height of superstorm Sandy?s worst winds and flooding, forcing staff to evacuate at least 215 patients, including many who were critically ill.

A failed back-up generator forced NYU Langone Medical Center to send 93 patients to hospitals in the North Shore-LIJ health system, in emergency transfers one spokesman described as ?traumatic.?

?They were literally carrying them down the stairs,? said Terry Lynam, spokesman for the North Shore-LIJ system.

Another 19 NYU patients, presumably cancer patients, went to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, said Chris Hickey, a hospital spokeswoman.

Critically ill patients, including babies, from the NYU Langone neonatal and pediatric intensive care units went to New York Presbyterian Hospital at both the Weill-Cornell and Washington Heights campuses, said spokeswoman Kathy Robinson.

AT NYU Langone, the hospital?s telephone service, email and website were all down Tuesday morning.

?Due to the severity of Hurricane Sandy and the higher than expected storm surge, we are in the process? of transferring approximately 215 patients within the medical center to nearby facilities,? the hospital said in a statement Monday.

Patients who were transferred from one hospital to another amid the howling storm were understandably shaken by the ordeal, said Lynam. He said social workers were being made available to patients who needed counseling or other assistance Tuesday.

?We are recognizing that this was obviously a traumatic incident,? Lynam said.

Mount Sinai Medical Center also joined in efforts to evacuate patients, the hospital said in a statement.

Across the city, other hospitals also opened their doors to evacuated patients. At St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, Dr. Ernest Patti said hospital officials were in discussions with at least two other hospitals to accept patients after back-up power systems failed.

?We?re fortunate. We sit up on a high hill. We didn?t drown in the flooding,? said Patti, senior attending physician of emergency medicine.?

The most effective self defense is automatic, and you don?t have to think about it, because chances are, when you are attacked, especially if you don?t have any self defense training, your response will be to get away, ?flight,? instead of stay, ?fight.? This so called ?fight or flight? reaction occurs every time a person is in danger?

In Self DefenseIn Self Defense is inspired by the true-life story of a martial arts legend who died at the hand of his own son. After fighting in the jungles of the South Pacific in World War II, Willy Wetzel and his family migrated from Indonesia to America in 1956. Willy opened one of the first martial arts schools in the United States in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He was a pioneer and became known worldwide for his mastery of many martial arts forms. The finest pupil Willy ever taught, was his second son, Roy Wetzel. The Wetzels all had their battle scars, some more visible than others. When Roy returned from Viet Nam with a Purple Heart, he hoped for a peaceful life at home. Instead Roy found himself in a fight with his father. One fateful night, their strained relationship finally came to a head. As Roy's young daughter lay asleep in the next room, a weapon-filled brutal fight between father and son ensued. The aftermath of Willy's last skirmish would leave Roy bloody and beaten and charged by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with Murder. This led to a controversial trial and the original court transcripts contained in the second half of this non-fiction novel give a compelling account of the prolonged legal contest that stirred up many debates. Following the lives of the Wetzels in intricate detail, In Self Defense will keep you turning the page till the very end.

The online vault at SI.com contains all sorts of treasures that no one has the time to search for.? Fortunately, one of our readers had both the time and inclination to find an article that I vividly recall reading at at time when I was younger than my kid is now.

In 1979, Sports Illustrated pondered the future of pro football.? Here are some of the quotes, each of which were followed by comments from Frank Deford that best can be described as pre-Internet snark.

?In the year 2000, there won?t be any contact below the waist.? ?Bum Phillips, Head Coach, Houston Oilers.? (Said DeFord in response, ?Yeah, O.K.?)

A dozen years after 2000, Bum?s vision has yet to come to fruition.? But it?s moving in that direction.? And it could take another big step there in the offseason, after the 2011 hit by Bills receiver Stevie Johnson on Chiefs safety Eric Berry and the hit from earlier this month by Jets guard Matt Slauson on Texans linebacker Brian Cushing.

?Players will look a lot different: lighter equipment, more formfitting shoulder pads, a different type of helmet, soft rib pads.? ?Dan Rooney, President, Pittsburgh Steelers.

Of course, we won?t notice any of those differences this weekend when the Steelers play; we?ll be too distracted by the prison bumblebee throwback uniforms.

?There?ll be a little metal fleck in the football, so you can tell for sure whether the guy with the ball got over the goal line or was pushed back.? ?Tex Schramm, General Manager, Dallas Cowboys.

Schramm was a sage.? And that?s one change the NFL needs to embrace.

?Everything will become more specialized. On defense, you?ll get pass rushers and run defenders, first-down and third-down defensive ends. You?ll see relief quarterbacks.? ?Tom Flores, Head Coach, Oakland Raiders.

Relief quarterbacks have yet to take root, but for the 2007 season, when the Cardinals would bring out Kurt Warner whenever they fell behind. And then they?d putt Matt Leinart back in when Warner pulled things even.

?It?s a very tough, very hard game, and I think more and more it?s going to be played by the so-called underprivileged. It?s too tough, too physical a game for a society that?s become so affluent. Kids can get the same great cardiovascular exercise from soccer.? ?Marv Levy.

That?s the argument that has been raised in the wake of the new sensitivity to concussions.? Football could become a way out for the have-nots, and the best of the best eventually will entertain the haves and the have-mores.

The article, after the parade of quotes, focuses on Byron Donzis, a then-47-year-old inventor who had developed a flak jacket and who had all sorts of other ideas (some crazy, some sane) about the future of pro football, from an equipment standpoint. But Deford eventually focuses on broader assessments of the game.

?The feeling is that rosters will grow, but the schedule will not (you believe that?), and that the NFL won?t expand abroad because the foreigners wouldn?t be sufficiently interested in an American game played by Americans,? Deford wrote. ?No, even in 2000 the referees won?t use TV replays to assist them in making their calls.?

It?s an intriguing article. And it makes us wonder how different the NFL will be in another 33 years. Feel free to drop some ideas below.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says voters saw again this week why male politicians shouldn't be making health care decisions for women.

Obama's comments were a reference to remarks by Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock. The Republican said pregnancies that result from rape are "something God intended."

The president didn't mention Mourdock by name. He said, as long as he is president, women will be able to make their own health care decisions.

It's the first time Obama has referenced Mourdock's comments at a campaign rally.

Obama's team is intensifying its criticism of Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney for refusing to withdraw support for Mourdock. Romney appears in a television advertisement on Mourdock's behalf.

Obama's Thursday morning rally in Tampa, Fla., kicked off the second day of his 40-hour battleground state blitz.

Ex-Goldman director Gupta gets 2-year prison sentence

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Disgraced Wall Street titan and philanthropist Rajat Gupta was sentenced to only two years in prison, a much lighter sentence than U.S. prosecutors had demanded, even though the federal judge who imposed it on Wednesday called his insider trading crimes "disgusting" and "a terrible breach of trust."

Gupta was also ordered to pay a $5 million (3.1 million pounds) fine. He was convicted in Manhattan federal court last June for leaking Goldman Sachs boardroom secrets to Raj Rajaratnam, the hedge fund manager at the centre of a U.S. government crackdown on insider trading over the past four years.

Some legal experts said the sentence came as a surprise, while others said the judge struck a fine balance.

U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff told a sombre courtroom audience, including Gupta's wife and four adult daughters, that the illegal sharing of corporate secrets at the height of the 2008 financial crisis "was the functional equivalent of stabbing Goldman in the back."

Gupta, 63, gave no visible reaction to the sentence, which was given at the end of a 30-minute statement in which the judge spelled out the businessman's "extraordinary" philanthropy over decades that stood in stark contrast to his crimes.

Bill Gates, Microsoft Corp's co-founder, and former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan were among 400 friends and luminaries who had written letters to the judge urging leniency.

During Gupta's trial, the court heard how Gupta had tipped off his then friend and business associate Rajaratnam between September and October of 2008. Within minutes of a conference call of members of Goldman's board on September 23, 2008, Gupta told Rajaratnam that influential investor Warren Buffett was infusing $5 billion into the investment bank. Rajaratnam traded on the information as the market was closing.

In his statement on Wednesday, the judge said the tip "was not only overwhelming, but it was disgusting in its implications ... a terrible breach of trust" at a time when Goldman Sachs was in turmoil.

But the judge also said: "I have never encountered a defendant whose past history suggests such an extraordinary devotion ... to people in need."

Rakoff ordered Gupta to begin his sentence on January 8, 2013. He denied Gupta's lawyer's bid to have him freed on bail pending an appeal, which could last as long as two years.

The former Goldman director is the most influential corporate figure to be convicted in the wide U.S. probe of insider trading involving fund managers, traders, consultants and executives. He is a former global head of the McKinsey & Co management consultancy, and once sat on the boards of Procter & Gamble Co and American Airlines as well advising philanthropies including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gupta's sentence was less than the eight to 10 years sought by prosecutors, but more than the punishment of probation and community service in Rwanda that Gupta's lawyers had proposal. The judge dismissed that proposal as "a kind of Peace Corps for insider traders."

The sentence was also less than some other insider trading defendants who went to trial and received four, five and even 10 years imprisonment. Rajaratnam is serving an 11-year prison sentence, one of the longest for insider trading.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Tarlowe on Wednesday argued for a sentence of at least eight years, telling the court "Mr Gupta knew as much about the sanctity of these types of corporate confidences as anybody, and that's what makes it so shocking."

New York securities class action and shareholder rights lawyer Mark Rifkin said the judge "understood both sides of the argument, and the relatively light sentence he imposed balances Gupta's misuse of his position against a lifetime of good work."

But Andrew Stoltmann, an attorney and investor rights advocate based in Chicago, wondered whether Gupta's "Mother Teresa-like halo" had warranted a sentence that was "little more than a slap on the wrist."

"He had such an important role at some of these companies that it is kind of the ultimate betrayal of trust."

When Gupta took his turn to address the court, he read for six minutes from a prepared statement, using bland language that stopped short of fully admitting his conduct, but apologizing to "extraordinary institutions and outstanding people" he knows and to his family.

"I feel terrible that they have been burdened with totally undeserved negative attention. I apologize to them and ask for their forgiveness."

Federal judges have wide leeway in sentencing, and Rakoff has a reputation for veering from guidelines designed for courts in handing down punishment. Gupta had faced a maximum sentence of 20 years for securities fraud and five years for conspiracy.

Gupta's lawyer, Gary Naftalis, arguing for a lenient sentence, said his client had suffered a "fall from grace of Greek tragedy proportions."

"This was an iconic figure who had been a role model for countless people around the globe," Naftalis said. "He is no more."

The case is USA v Gupta, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 11-cr-907.

Dropbox for iOS removes the photo resolution cap, stretches out to iPhone 5 size

As much of a boon as Dropbox has been for iOS users, it's been held back for shutterbugs wanting a one-for-one translation of their images. Any cloud photos saved for posterity were shrunk to iPhone 4S size and largely negated the point of a local copy. No more: an update to the app removes the resolution ceiling and shows whatever the iPad, iPhone or iPod can handle. While it still compresses the final image, all the basic nuances should remain intact. There's a treat in store for those who want to see more of their files inside of the Dropbox app, too, with iPhone 5 support putting to work those 112,640 pixels of extra screen real estate. Just don't expect to use Dropbox as a mobile viewer for your Hasselblad photos and you'll likely be happy.

Special Etch A Sketch shakes up county GOP

? There will be politics, rallying cries, promises and beans. There will also be kids? toys.

Ohio Art?s Etch A Sketch toys are vehemently nonpartisan, but after a top aide to presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Romney?s views would change from trying to please hard-core conservatives to the mass-appeal of moderation after the primaries ?like an Etch A Sketch,? the classic toy became a political metaphor.

?We stand firmly behind our proclamation that ?We have a left knob and a right knob for each political party.? And ? ? when we both work together, we can do loop de loops,? ? the toy?s website states. ?We?re especially serious about the loop de loops part.?

So to commemorate being part of the lexicon, Ohio Art has created special editions of its classic drawing tablet, the ?Shake It Up, America!? Etch A Sketch. They come in both red and blue for the red-state blue-state designations that have become so popular, and you can even vote for red or blue on the shakeitupamerica.net website.

But just because the company is non-partisan ? the website says ?Our political neutrality is unflappable? ? doesn?t mean its officers are. So Ohio Art Chairman Bill Killgallon will not only attend the Allen County Republican Party?s annual Bean Dinner, but he?ll be bringing 100 of the special edition Etch A Sketches with him.

Party Chairman Steve Shine said some of the toys will be given away as prizes, the rest will be sold at cost.

?Why he?s bringing the blue ones, I don?t know,? Shine said, laughing. ?Unless they were taken off the product line for malfunctions.?

Shine said Killgallon has attended Allen County GOP events in the past, but this is the first time he?s been singled out as a guest.

?We?ve known each other quite a few years,? Shine said. ?But this is the first time he?s brought something germane to the event.?

Keynote speakers will be U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman, U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mourdock, and gubernatorial candidate Rep. Mike Pence.

?Being that it?s one week before the election, it?s going to be a supercharged political atmosphere,? Shine said.

The dinner is 6 p.m. Oct. 30 at Ceruti?s Summit Park, 6601 Innovation Blvd. Tickets are $65 per person with a cash bar.

A $175 VIP reception begins at 5 p.m. Call 745-1970 or email beandinner@allencountygop.org for information.

Killgallon?s trip from Bryan won?t be a long one, but the Etch A Sketches he brings will have come a long way ? production was moved to China just before Christmas 2000.

Rethinking Bonds In Taxable | The White Coat Investor- Investing ...

For some time those ?in the know? have been recommending that if you have both taxable and tax-protected accounts, that you preferentially place stocks into the taxable account and more tax-inefficient bonds into the tax-protected accounts (like IRAs and 401Ks.)? This makes sense because stocks are inherently more tax-efficient than bonds, since much of their growth is deferred, and even distributed capital gains and dividends are only taxed at the lower tax rate.? I wasn?t initially convinced, so I did the math once, and sure enough, it made sense to put stocks in taxable.? This is actually the main argument I used against using municipal bonds- because most investors are better off using fully taxable bonds in their tax-protected accounts.

Current Market Environment Changes Assumptions

Since I?ve done that math, however, two very significant things have happened in the market.? The most important is that interest rates have come way down.? Less important, but still significant, the spread between municipal bond yields and similarly risky taxable bond yields has narrowed a great deal.? These changes mean that the assumptions plugged into the equations now have to change.? In this case, when you change the assumptions, you also change the conclusions.

TFB Gets It Right

Harry Sit, over at The Finance Buff, recently pointed this out.? His argument was that it?s important to consider the ABSOLUTE tax cost of an investment, not necessarily the RELATIVE tax cost. His example changes the assumptions used in previous calculations.? He asks which should be put in a taxable account first, a stock fund returning 7% taxed at 20%, or a bond fund returning 2% taxed at 40%?? The stock fund loses 1.4% a year to taxed, whereas the bond fund loses 0.8% a year to taxes.? Although the stock fund is relatively more tax-efficient, on an absolute basis, the bond fund is more tax-efficient.? I think he?s absolutely correct.

Forget Putting Your E- Fund Into Tax-Protected

A few years ago investing math nerds were figuring out ways to put their emergency fund into their tax protected accounts (basically when you needed money you?d sell the exact amount of stocks you needed in taxable and buy those same stocks in the tax-protected account so you never had to sell stocks low.)? Now this approach doesn?t make any sense at all, since any investment that is reasonably safe enough to be an emergency fund has a yield of 1% or less.? It?s really all about the expected returns.

Importance of Being Financially Sophisticated

Many investors (and I?m sure I?m somewhat guilty too) simply learn a handful of rules of thumb rather than reading the primary literature from which they come, such as these articles by investment authorities recommending ?stocks in taxable?: Journal of Finance, TIAA-CREF, and Vanguard. ? But if you don?t understand the assumptions and methods used to derive those rules of thumb, you won?t realize when it is time to ditch them.? Lowered expected returns not only affects the ?bonds in taxable? rule, but it also affects other well-known rules such as the 4% withdrawal rule.? Your financial education must be ongoing throughout your life, just like your continuing medical education.

What should you do?

So what should you do now that you?ve realized stocks in taxable is no longer right?? Probably nothing, but it depends.? I won?t be making any changes because nearly my entire portfolio is in tax-protected accounts.? The question is simply irrelevant to my current portfolio, and perhaps yours as well.? If you have no taxable account, you don?t need either stocks or bonds in it.

Even if you do have a taxable account, you still may not want to do anything dramatic, especially if your stocks or stock funds have a low relative cost basis.? They may still be highly tax-efficient if you plan on either dying (your heirs get a step up in basis) or donating the shares to charity (no tax cost) any time soon. Even if you don?t anticipate either of these occurring in the near future, the small advantage in increased tax efficiency each year isn?t worth paying a big tax bill (plus possible fees and commissions) this year in order to reorganize the portfolio.

So if you do want to make this change, it would behoove you to do it gradually, mostly with new money.? The advantage is quite small (1.4% vs 0.8% currently with The Finance Buff?s assumptions), and will shrink as interest rates rise.? It just doesn?t matter as much as it did with higher interest rates.

Don?t worry about getting burned if interest rates rise and you need to switch back.? As The Finance Buff rightly points out, if interest rates rise your bond funds will likely have a capital loss so selling them in taxable isn?t going to hurt your tax situation any (and might even help!)

Muni Bonds Back On The Menu

Since holding bonds in taxable is reasonable again, you?ll need to choose between taxable and municipal bonds.? Most high income professionals who do the calculation (if Taxable yield * (1-marginal tax rate) < Municipal Yield means use munis) will find a municipal bond fund to be a great option.

Asset location matters, but how much it matters (as well as where optimal asset location may be for stocks and bonds) varies with changes in interest rates.

Folding@Home packs up on PlayStation 3: over 100 million computation hours added to research

FoldingHome packs up on PlayStation 3

Squared away in the PlayStation 3's latest software update post, Sony announced that the Folding@Home service will be retired starting next month, alongside the console's 4.30 update. The project, which tied into Stanford University's work on protein folding and research into the causes of a diseases like Alzheimer's, pulled in over 15 million PlayStation owners since it started in 2007. In fact, according to Stanford's client statistics, PS3 users offered the second greatest contribution after Windows devices, adding more than 100 million computation hours to the research project -- and well, we did our bit.

Planning a Backyard Barbeque Party | CoolHQ

If you regularly cook your meals on a barbeque grill, you are not alone. Grilling is a popular American pastime. While many individuals end up grilling for their family, not everyone makes the decision to host a backyard barbeque party, despite the fact that it is a good idea. If you are interested in socializing and sharing good food with your friends, family, coworkers, or neighbors, you may want to, at least, think about planning a backyard barbeque party.

Backyard barbeque parties, like most other parties, require planning. While the planning associated with a backyard barbeque may not be as large as most other parties, it is still important. The proper planning of a party, including a barbeque, will help to ensure that your party is the best that it can be. For that reason, you may want to start making party plans as soon as you make the decision to host a party.

Since backyard barbeque parties are centered on food, you will want to think about the food that you will serve. To please all of your party guests, you will want to have a fairly large selection of meats. This will help to make sure that all of your party guests are able to eat the foods that they like. In addition to meats, you may also want to think about side dishes. Popular barbeque party side dishes may include, but should not be limited to, toss salads, macaroni salads, coleslaw, and fruit salads.

In addition to the foods that you are interested in serving, you may also want to plan how those foods will be made. Of course, the purpose of a barbeque party is to grill the foods then, but most of the side dishes will need to be prepared ahead of time. To ensure that all of your side dishes are prepared on time, you may want to start cooking them the day before your barbeque or earlier that morning. If you are having a large party, you may need to make a large amount of food. If this is the cases, it may be a good idea to have party guests bring a small side dish.

Aside from the main food, served at your barbecue, you may also want to think about drinks and snacks. For a reasonable price, you should be able to obtain a number of different snacks for your barbeque. Great snack ideas include crackers and cheese, cookies, chips, and pretzels. For drinks, you need to decide as to whether or not you want alcoholic beverages served at your party. Regardless of whether or not you choose to serve alcohol, you should be able to purchase your party drinks from most supermarkets.

While backyard barbeques are center on food, additional activities may be a good idea. At most department stores, you should be able to find a number of affordable toys or backyard activities. Many individuals, especially teens or adult males, enjoy playing sports. A football, basketball or horseshoe pit may be a great addition to your backyard barbeque. If children will be attending your party, you may want to have child friendly games on hand.

If you have a pool, it may be a good idea to incorporate swimming into your backyard barbeque; however, it is optional. If you are planning on allowing your party guests to use your pool, you may want to think about establishing some rules. These rules should focus on pool safety and children in the pool. While establishing rules at your barbeque may seem like a bad idea, it is not, especially when it comes to pool safety.

Of course, you will also want to invite your guests to your party. This can be done with formal invitations, a quick phone call, or a quick email. In addition to informing guest of your impending barbeque party, a guest list may also help you prepare for the big day.

Baseball-Young relishing Mr. October role for Tigers

DETROIT, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Playing on a team that boasts more stars than an Academy Award-winning film, Detroit Tigers designated hitter Delmon Young has often been content to play a supporting role.

But with Detroit in the World Series for the first time in six years, Young is once again commanding centre stage with the clutch hitting that earned him American League Championship Series (ALCS) most valuable player honours as the Tigers swept past the New York Yankees into the Fall Classic.

With a franchise record seven career home runs and 14 runs batted in (RBI) over two postseasons with Detroit, Young has become Mr. October for the Tigers.

Right on cue, Young grabbed the spotlight against New York, batting .353 with two homers and six RBIs to steal the thunder from his more illustrious team mates, Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera and prize off-season signing Prince Fielder.

"He got hot again this year at the right time for us and he stepped it up under the big lights," Tigers manager Jim Leyland told reporters. "Not that they are not bright all year but they are a little brighter this time of year."

Cabrera, the first player in 45 years to claim the Triple Crown by leading the AL in home runs (44), RBI (139) and batting average (.330), and Fielder, with 30 homers and 108 runs batted in, dominated during the regular season but have been slow to find their groove in the playoffs.

Young's 18 homers and 74 RBI may pale alongside Cabrera and Fielder but his value at the plate is underlined by Leyland's decision to play his designated hitter in left field at National League ballparks simply because his bat is too hot to leave on the bench.

"As a child growing up, your dream's always winning the (decisive) Game Seven in the World Series, walk-off hit," said Young. "So it's fun knowing you get to go there.

Young's dream is coming closer reality, although it will be against either the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals or San Francisco Giants when the Fall Classic begins on Wednesday.

A World Series ring would offer a bright finish to a season that got off to an ugly start for the 27-year-old outfielder, who was suspended for seven days by Major League Baseball after his arrest in New York City in April for allegedly yelling anti-Semitic remarks during a scuffle with tourists.

Young was charged with a hate crime and later apologised for the incident, which is scheduled to go to court in November.

"Delmon kind of beats to his own drum," explained Leyland. "We have a very good relationship but I kind of stay out of his way because he knows much more about hitting than I do and he knows what pitchers are trying to do to him.

"He knows guys that he can hit and he knows guys he can't hit and he's up front about it. He has a real good plan about how to go about it." (Editing by Frank Pingue)

Travel guide hails Chch destination - Stuff

restart mall

Supplied

RE:START MALL: Part of what Mayor Bob Parker says makes Christchurch 'a city like no other in the world'.

Christchurch's earthquake recovery is winning global recognition and is set to make it one of the top tourist destinations in the world.

The city has won sixth spot in Lonely Planet's top ten cities for its 2013 Best in Travel, released today, the only New Zealand city to make the list.

The travel bible's annual ?best-of' publication identifies the best cities, regions and countries for the coming year and travel trends such as "the best place to do something new", "oddest food museums" and "the best place to hunt for buried treasure".

A Lonely Planet endorsement is seen as a massive boon to any city's tourism industry.

Christchurch is one of just three southern hemisphere centres on the list; the others are Hobart in Australia (7) and Puerto Iguazu in Argentina (10).

"Christchurch is bouncing back with a new energy and inventiveness," it says.

"The recovery effort is well under way and 2013 will be an intriguing year to join the rebirth of this proud southern city.

"In the city itself, exciting things are going on . . . live-music venues have popped up all over the place and innovative artworks fill empty demolition sites."

The Buskers Festival, Ellerslie Flower Show and Cup and Show Week events all rate a mention; the Gap Filler project is singled out and the Re:Start mall, listed under "Most Bizarre Sight", "sees retailers back in action on the fringe of the CBD in a colourful labyrinth of shipping containers".

Familiar phrases to Cantabrians such as "Student Volunteer Army", "Farmy Army" and "cardboard cathedral" appear as well.

Lonely Planet Asia-Pacific sales and marketing director Chris Zeiher said the "inventiveness, energy, enthusiasm" of Christchurch's quake recovery warranted its inclusion on the list.

"We wanted to infuse travellers with the sense of rebuild and fun that this place has in really embracing the challenges. We really wanted to get that across to our travellers.

"This is a city that's re-emerging. If you've been before it's going to be quite different . . . and you actually want to come and experience that."

The rating was based on what Christchurch would soon be, not what it was now, Zeiher said.

"I like the energy of what Christchurch is doing. You're . . . living with constant change and it's really exciting to see a city embrace that.

"We really can't think of any other city that's done this anywhere in the world."

Travellers were "incredibly surprised" by Christchurch, he said.

"They get here expecting one thing, because the images that they saw was of devastation, and when they come here they see a city that's quite vibrant and changing."

Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive Tim Hunter welcomed the listing as "worthy recognition for the entire city.

"You've got this real energy and determination for people to get their lives back and to get all the stuff that they like back.

"Let's . . . use it to show we've got a bit of attitude here and we like doing things a bit differently. All that energy is really sending a signal to travellers that this is quite an interesting place to be."

International visitor nights in Christchurch had halved since the quakes, Hunter said, but a Lonely Planet mention could ease that and boost the city's position as the gateway to the South Island.

Gap Filler co-ordinator Coralie Winn, whose project won a ringing endorsement, said ephemeral attractions like theirs drew people to the central city.

"There's something that's very honest about what's happened here. It's very engaged with the situation. It's unique to this place."

Christchurch mayor Bob Parker said Christchurch was "a city like no other in the world".

"There's a real energy and buzz in Christchurch which will intensify as the rebuild ramps up so it is an exciting time to visit."

Associate Minister of Tourism Chris Tremain said the endorsement was "a real coup".

"This is exactly the sort of boost we needed."

WHY IT MATTERS: Race

The issue:

The nation's complexion is rapidly changing. A more racially and ethnically diverse population is rising so that, perhaps within three decades, whites will no longer be the majority. That means shifts in political power, the risk of intensified racial tensions and also the opportunity to forge a multiracial society unlike anything in America's past.

___

Where they stand:

Nearly half a century after the signing of the Civil Rights Act, America elected its first black president in 2008. President Barack Obama says that milestone alone changed attitudes on race, yet "I never bought into the notion that by electing me, somehow we were entering into a postracial period." He's trod carefully on matters of race, in some minds too carefully, in favor of a rising-tide-lifts-all-boats philosophy.

Mitt Romney appears to favor the melting-pot ideal more than the mosaic, envisioning a future in which Americans put aside cultural differences grounded in race and ethnicity to stand as one people. A gulf remains, though, between minorities and the Republican Party as blacks and Latinos in particular continue to see their interests better represented by Democrats. Hispanic Republicans are making striking inroads in state politics; nationally, it's a different story. GOP immigration policy alone has been taken as a sign of hostility.

___

Why it matters:

The U.S. hit a historic benchmark when the census announced in May that a majority of children younger than 1 ? 50.4 percent ? were minorities. The fast growth in minority populations is due largely to increases in Latino births and high immigration. Hispanics are the most populous minority group, numbering 52 million last year (and representing close to 17 percent of the population). The census put the black population at 43.9 million and Asians the third largest minority group at 18.2 million.

Meanwhile, the white population in the 100 largest metro areas dropped to 57 percent from 71 percent over the last 20 years, according to the Brookings Institution. Demographers predict minorities might become the majority by 2042, although slowdowns in growth in the Asian and Hispanic populations could delay that. Minorities now make up more than 36 percent of the U.S. population.

The shift means a change in the needs of the overall U.S. population and in backgrounds.

Unemployment is higher among blacks and Latinos, as is the lack of health insurance. Latino children have higher rates of poverty. More black men are in America's prisons; many Latinos are grappling with deportation of family members.

The economic and housing crises hit black and Latino communities harder.

U.S. minority populations are younger, which means they will be a big share of the workforce for years to come and a growing force at the ballot box.

Obama's election in 2008 underscored the nation's racial gulf in politics even as it made history. He was elected with 96 percent of the black vote, 67 percent of the Hispanic vote and about 43 percent of the white vote.

Minorities increasingly will influence elections if their turnout keeps rising and the pool of voters keeps growing. It's certain minorities will want to see more people in office who look like them, understand their needs and in some cases speak their language. Communities are grappling with new populations and cultures in places far removed from America's usual centers of multiethnic life.

The next president, black or white, has no choice but to keep matters of race and equality on his agenda.

Get The Right Gear Before You Start Playing Sports

Sports is a great way to have a lot of fun. It's great exercise, gives you plenty of motivation, and allows for a lot of social interaction. Sure, you might get a better workout if you put on your headphones and sweat for hours at the gym every day, but that requires tremendous amount of willpower, and it's generally not a lot of fun. When people think of going to the gym, it's generally something they think "have to do," rather than something they look forward to.

But when you play a sport, any kind of team sport, it's a lot more fun. This not only means you'll be able to look forward to it, but it means you'll likely do it more often. Picking a sport is generally a matter of trial and error. Maybe some guys are leaving work on Friday afternoon and they ask you in passing if you'd like to join them for a game of volleyball. You decide to, think it's fun, and you're hooked.

Other ways to get into a sport is by watching it on TV, and then deciding it looks fun. For example, when various countries teams make it to advanced levels in the Soccer World Cup, many citizens in that country decide to take up soccer for the first time. Other people may decide to take up a sport that is positively displayed by a local athlete during the Olympics.

However you choose your sport, it's very important to have the right gear. You don't want to be caught with your pants down, so to speak. That's why you should take your time to make sure you've got the right stuff. There's a couple ways of doing this. One is to simply ask around. Find some people who are already involved in the sport. Get their opinions on the best gear. Not only will you find some expert opinions, but you might get some great deals on some used equipment. Many people that have played sports for a while have tons of old stuff that they don't know what to do with.

Of course, there are some basics that you'll need for every sport. A good pair of shoes, the proper clothing, and whatever kind of athletic socks you like. Many people forget about getting socks, but without the right socks of the right construction, you might get plenty of blisters. Nobody likes blisters.

Decade-Long Study Suggests Multivitamins Lower Cancer Risk ...

If you diligently take your multivitamin every day believing it?s got to help somehow, a new study has got your back. In a?recently completed large clinical trial of older men, a link was established between taking a daily multivitamin and a moderate decrease in cancer rates.

Specifically, nearly 15,000 U.S. male doctors aged 50 and older participated in the placebo-controlled study over a median range of 11.3 years. Patients took a daily multivitamin (Centrum Silver from Pfizer) or a placebo. A statistically significant reduction of 8 percent in total cancer incidence was observed among those taking the multivitamin daily. The study was recently published online in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

So it?s not a cure, but every little bit helps when it comes to cancer.

But like all studies, there are some important caveats to consider. For one, this study not only included only older men, but those men just so happened to be physicians as well. That?s an important component to the findings because older physicians likely have quality healthcare and have had it in the past. Furthermore, their knowledge base about medicine means that they?re likely to have more awareness about their health and preventative medicine in general. That isn?t to say that they are altogether healthy either. Doctors are notoriously overworked and under enormous stress as well as struggling with weight issues like many Americans.

Another important point to consider is that the reduction in cancer incidence seemed to vary with the type of cancer. While the number of cancers reported overall was lower, there was no difference in the number of prostate or colorectal cancers reported. This could be because the sample size was not large enough to resolve a difference or because of the specific role the multivitamins play.

It remains to be seen whether the multivitamin benefit of this study is universal or helping a particular segment of society that is has a specific kind of lifestyle.

It?s a safe bet that Pfizer will be adding cancer prevention language to its Centrum Silver marketing.

Still it?s good news for multivitamins and dietary supplements in general,?especially with experts casting doubt lately on their usefulness. For example, a?recent federal report stated that 20 percent of supplements are improperly labeled or make claims that have not been scientifically proven. While research at one time suggested the health benefit of fish oils, a slew of recent studies?have cast doubt on those claims. With all the negative press,?a third of Americans still take a daily multivitamin and half take some kind of supplement.

It wasn?t that long ago?when another widely available pill became the cancer prevention golden child: aspirin. Last spring, three separate studies were published linking daily aspirin with lower cancer incidence in the range of 20 to 30 percent. At the same time, however, other studies have shown no effect with aspirin on cancer rates. More recent studies suggest that aspirin may help prevent cancer?s spread and recurrence, yet these are focused on specific types of cancer only.

Although cancer deaths in the U.S. continue to decline, increases in longevity ensure that cancer will affect more people as they live longer.

So what?s going on here? Why do new studies come out every few months, some of which correct or negate previous studies? And why does it seem like nothing about cancer prevention seems definitive?

One of the biggest problems with cancer is that it?s not just one disease. In fact,?a recent genomic study?identified four separate and distinct types of breast cancer alone. Furthermore, cancer varies with gender, race, age, and culture. It also makes a significant difference where the cancer originates in the body. Many men, for instance, get prostate cancer and survive, but the same cannot be said for pancreatic cancer. How the disease affects the body has a lot to do with physiology, which is influenced by a multitude of factors including diet and drugs. Finally, scientists are just starting to unravel cancer at both the molecular and genetic levels. As it stands, we don?t really understand all that is going on with cancer, but what is known is that?it?s fairly complex.

All this means that cancer is probably the greatest medical challenge in history. Though we are closing in on a cure, it is a long road full of small successes, which now includes this latest news about the preventative benefits of multivitamins. Hopefully, this finding can be verified or at least help to further unravel the mysteries of cancer.

Kentucky: Roar of the Tommy Guns, smell of the crowd

WEST POINT, Ky (Reuters) - The traffic jam began just off Dixie Highway - the four-lane U.S. 60 route between Louisville and Fort Knox - and crept through a hilly autumn forest for more than a mile to the Knob Creek Gun Range.

The slow-moving snarl last weekend brought upwards of 17,000 people to Knob Creek's three-day Machine Gun Shoot, an event that twice a year draws machine gun collectors and enthusiasts from around the country to test out weapons like Tommy Guns, water-cooled Brownings and M16s.

"Guns aren't bad," said Knob Creek manager Kenny Sumner. "They're only bad when the wrong people have them."

The event, which started in the 1970s and bills itself as the country's largest, shows the attraction for some people of firing off renowned big guns, even as the presidential candidates spar over whether modern military-style weapons should be allowed in civilian hands.

In the recent debate, President Barack Obama said he would back an assault weapons ban, while Republican candidate Mitt Romney said he's not in favor of such a law, though he signed one while governor of Massachusetts.

Machine gun shoots like Knob Creek - and this weekend's competing Big Sandy shoot in Arizona - offer enthusiasts a rare opportunity to get their hands on fully automatic weapons, which can be difficult to buy under federal laws, and to fire a variety of them.

Most of the guns used and sold at machine gun shoots are fairly old. Federal law prohibits private individuals from possessing or acquiring machine guns other than those lawfully registered before 1986.

Inside the gates of the Knob Creek Shoot, gun dealers mingled with Tea Party activists and sport shooters. Knives, ammunition, all types of guns and accessories, and bumper stickers were on sale from about 225 vendors.

There were military insignias, tri-cornered hats and "Don't Tread on Me" flags. At least one booth sold flags and banners with swastikas, and uniformed paramilitary groups also displayed signs bearing the Nazi symbol.

Most of the vendors were arrayed around the range's main firing line, the event's center stage with weapons pre-positioned on tripods or other mounts.

Concession stands and the National Rifle Association signup booth shared prime real estate next to a line of packed bleachers. Nearly everyone used ear protection to counter the extreme roar from the simultaneous firing of well over a dozen machine guns only a few feet away.

Dust, smoke and the smell of gunpowder filled the air.

Targets included old appliances, cars and boats spread out down a narrow, wooded valley, some perched on the hillsides, others right handy to the shooters. Some were set ablaze by tracer bullets. The night show, which featured barrels of fuel with pyrotechnic charges attached, resulted in fiery mushroom clouds and fireballs.

Admission for adults was $10. The crowd was almost entirely white, with twice as many men as women. Kids under age 12, mostly boys, some riding their fathers' shoulders, got in for half price. Some even got to have their own quality time with an assault weapon.

Nine-year-old Cody Miller from Cincinnati was among them. At a secondary firing range a few hundred yards from the main one, a gun range assistant laid an empty ammo box on the ground for the youngster to stand on to fire a Soviet-made PKS heavy machine gun.

"Are you ready for this?" the spotter asked. The boy nodded and opened fire as his proud father looked on and photographed the scene. Cody said this was his second year firing machine guns. No big deal, he shrugged.

"We shoot a lot," explained his father, Jeff Miller.

Joshua Horwitz, director of the Washington-based Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, said his group has no position on organized shooting events like Knob Creek.

"Our feeling is that if you're going to use a firearm, that's the place to do it - on a range," said Horwitz, whose organization is typically at odds with the National Rifle Association on relaxing gun laws.

Horwitz said he does see something disturbing in the symbolism and right-wing themes that sometimes emerge at shoots.

"Often at these events ... we see vestiges of the insurrectionist idea - the idea that firearms are to be stockpiled and used against the government," he said.

Many people who attend such events profess patriotism, he said, but "their contempt for the government borders on treason.

"I worry far more about the political ideology of these events than I do the firearms."

Big Think: The Importance of Yesterday | Masters of Media

About Richard Zimerman
I spent the past few years in Geneva, Switzerland doing a BA in Media Communications and Management also focusing part of my work on marketing. One of my key interests was information quality in the age of web 2.0 and how massive information sharing and UGC can interfere with the learning process. Currently I am doing a Masters at the UvA in New Media and Digital Culture. I am mostly interested in new developments in the technological sector, such as ubiquitous computing, and their impact on society and future business models.

The Big Think Logo

Archiving online can be a tricky undertaking. On the one hand we can?t get enough of it when it comes to news and scholarly articles or any other form of factual information but on the other hand there seems to be too much of it going on concerning personal or private data and irrelevant babble. In this text I will explore the topic of web archiving as an integral part of website design using the example of ?big think? and their partial front page archiving function. In comparing this way of creating a visual interface for archiving to other websites I will try to highlight the significance of archiving information in context as opposed to archiving standalone information.

Big Think Layout

Structure of the Website

The structure of the big think website is more or less standard for any blog site with the logo, some advertising, social media and the navigation in the header, followed by a banner with the daily stories and the popular posts or editor?s picks.

This is then followed by the main blogroll and the idea feed, occasionally interrupted by ads and newsletter signup fields. The website is then rounded off with the footer containing the topic selection, about us, contact and link sections.

The main part of this layout of course that drew my attention is a button, which is marked in orange on the graphic. I will refer to it as the ?time machine? button. It is a simple arrow that when clicked sets the date back one day at a time and changes the banner to display the idea of the day and the front page articles of the day before. This can then be repeated to view an earlier date.

The reason why I refer to this button as the time machine is because it doesn?t just list the articles of the day before but actually displays the layout of the day before in the banner allowing the user to virtually travel back in time to the web page of yesterday retaining the context of the articles.

Archiving Online

The issue with archiving online is similar to the problem of displaying information online and that is context. Take for example your standard blog website with continuous flow of information. In the present the content of the article can be compared with other content available in the present and organized into tag clouds or some other relevant visualization thus creating some form of context for it. When these articles are archived however the only context the user gets is the date when this article was published and (most of the time) who published it. Since the web is a dynamic medium, which doesn?t follow a set publishing rhythm it becomes difficult to trace contexts in the past.

Put that in direct comparison to print newspapers being archived as a whole and you will find a significant difference because whenever an archived newspaper is revisited the person viewing it can see what articles were displayed on the same page, their size relative to each other and the order in which they appeared on the page and on which page of the newspaper they appeared. The information of this newspaper can thus be studied in the context of this newspaper at a given date in time.

Now of course the blog does not have ?pages? like a newspaper but it does have sections. These sections, much like newspaper pages, give different weight to the articles. Once however these articles are archived the visual of this is hierarchy is lost and only the information from the article itself is left.

There are some who try to archive the web in one way or another such as the Wayback machine.?This can be done for various reasons, e.g. to see the evolution of the design of a web page or the change in technologies used to portray information and organize it on a page, but one of them could be to see the interplay of information on a web page at a given date in time. For example it is possible to see how a certain event was portrayed by a website at a given time such as 9/11.

?Big think?, with their time machine button on the front page influencing the banner and reloading the ?front page? of yesterday manages to partially recreate that effect of being able to see the context of information and of ideas at a given date in time and uses it as an integral part of their layout giving similar weight to the archived ?front page? almost as the present one.

The Importance of Yesterday

Apart from having the latest content most websites use a basic search function that allows the user to search for articles according to keywords or sometimes the date but most of the standards of archiving only extend to the information, which is being archived, not the actual website since the content is dynamic and loaded from databases to be viewed on a standard html/css hull.

The timely medium favors topical context (connected by tags) as opposed to historical context. Topical context can be extremely useful but not always the most relevant context for a specific piece of information.

The basic idea behind web archiving is to preserve the web, however current techniques of archiving usually only preserve information uploaded to the web. You may wonder what the difference is but once again the difference is very similar to the newspaper example given before. Archiving the newspaper and the cut out articles from a newspaper are two very different things used for two different types of research. One concentrates on the thing that happened and the other concentrates on how that which happened was portrayed in the media in context of the medium itself.

Similarly archiving articles scattered across the web, ordered by date or author or even simply by keywords achieves the archiving of information but it may not be enough to answer the questions of how this information was portrayed in the medium itself at a certain moment in time.

The comparison between the newspaper and the internet in this case is not here to show how something should be done but much rather that the current way of archiving web content may be lacking from the perspective of contextual information portrayal within the medium.

As mentioned before there are institutions, which attempt to archive some of the web in one way or another but the task is much more difficult for an outsider as opposed to the website itself. In the case of ?big think? this is being handled internally by the website (although it is not a screenshot of the entire site) with a button allowing the user to go back in time and view the ?website of yesterday?. To draw a rather banal parallel to the biggest social media website, the timeline idea may not be that bad.

Of course the big think model is only one example of how to visually integrate a different type of archiving into web design and there is no right way of doing this but at least it is being thought about and it could be thought about more because as the time machine function on the big think website proves, the ideas of yesterday may be just as good as the ones from tomorrow and losing the context may result in the loss of the big picture and hence the idea itself.
