Corporate philanthropy in the direction of arts and culture came by 7% last year to some level lower than in 2004/05, based on new numbers. The campaigning charity Arts & Company released original statistics before a full report due out in two weeks? time. Probably the most striking bad news is the fall for the fourth year in a row of economic investment in the arts, down to 134.2m, along with the growing space in fortunes between Birmingham and other areas.
But there have been more positive numbers published, not least an overall 4% growth in total private sector expense to 686m. That includes a 10% increase in financing from trusts and foundations and a 6% increase in private individual philanthropy that reverses the decline in the earlier two years. The figure for people in 2010/11 had been 382.2m, higher than ever. On the face of it, the figures would seem to be disappointing for the culture secretary, Jeremy Search, who has made boosting private giving towards the arts the central tenet from the coalition?s arts policy. He announced 2011 ?a year of company philanthropy?.
But Search drew the positives in the figures. He explained: ?This confounds the critics who said hello was a waste of time trying to boost philanthropic giving whenever times tend to be tough. It is also a real homage to the resolution of the social sector to boost its fundraiser and reinforce the financial resilience associated with arts companies. The Labour darkness arts minister, Dan Jarvis, warned: ?The government guaranteed that cuts in public financing for the arts would be replaced by philanthropists? generous donations across the country.
