Coming Soon: 200 theaters that let you smell and feel the movies

If you think 3D movies are gimmicky, wait 'til you hear what this South Korean company has in store for you. According to Los Angeles Times, South Korea's CJ Group is bringing the 4D movie experience to the United States, starting with a handful of theaters in New York and Los Angeles slated to open later this year.

Think of 4DX, which is what the company calls the whole package, as a 3D theater equipped with special effects. Seats are programmed to rattle and vibrate when an explosion goes off onscreen. There are wind, fog, and scent machines that give off smells the theater management thinks is appropriate for a scene. This review of the Avengers 4DX experience in Korea, for instance, says the whole cinema smelled like an auto repair shop throughout the movie.

While it does sound like a fun way to add a layer of excitement to an otherwise mundane movie night, tickets to 4D theaters are expected to cost $8 more than tickets to their regular, tamer counterparts. If an IMAX ticket in your place costs $20 or more, you'd have to pay roughly $30 for 4DX. Ouch.

The CJ Group plans to open up 200 4DX theaters in North America within the next five years.?Check out a trailer of 4D experience above.
