Projects will boost renewable energy

?

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced that 106 projects in 29 states, Guam and Puerto Rico have been selected for funding to produce renewable energy and make energy efficiency improvements. Funding is made available through USDA Rural Development?s Rural Energy for America Program, which is authorized by the 2008 Farm Bill.

For example, in Hampshire County, S.J. Morse Company is receiving a REAP grant to assist farmers, ranchers and rural small businesses in developing renewable energy systems, and in making energy-efficiency improvements to their operations. This project will purchase and install a new computer numeric-controlled machining center to enable the company to implement a more energy efficient process in its operations.

In Greenbrier County, Schleiff Rental Properties, LLC, is receiving a REAP grant to assist in providing for the purchase and installation of a small solar panel renewable energy system for business office space.

REAP provides grants and loan guarantees for agricultural producers and rural small businesses to reduce energy consumption and costs, use renewable energy technologies in their operations and conduct feasibility studies for renewable energy projects.
