Sugar cubes are good to have for both decorative purposes and for measuring your exact sugar intake. They're also pretty cheap, although you might be interesting in making your own flavored cubes or molding sugar into other shapes.
Culinary weblog Serious Eats explains that you simply combine sugar and water until the texture is even and the sugar seems just slightly moistened. Press the sugar/water mixture into your mold firmly and and let the sugar harden in the mold overnight. Ice cube trays work in a pinch but you'll probably want to cut up the cubes when they come out.
To experiment with flavors use vanilla extract, rosewater, and other aromatics to give your cocktails, coffee, or tea just the right flavor. Also try novelty cocktail ice cube trays for shape variations.
